Recording audio on a D5100 using a Zoom H4 field recorder

I'm considering using the Zoom H4 to record audio on my D5100. I wish the D5100 had manual gain control for audio, but the Zoom does. Has anyone used this combination and how do you like it ? It would be used primarily to record my band videos. ( Blues drummer )
