Fill Flash with D5100

Good morning,

I am trying to learn how to use fill flash. I have a D5100 and a 35mm f/1.8 lens with a YN-468 flash (couldn't afford an SB flash)

I had once seen a tutorial on fill flash for canon and never got the chance to practice it since I did not have a camera.

Can someone explain to me how I would be able to achieve this with my D5100, or if there is a tutorial even better!

Thank you :)

Fill in flash can be a bit sketchy as the surrounding or back drop will rarely have the same white balance.

It depends on your range from the camera to the subject and brightness of the background but the basic principle is to meter for the surrounding area or background either -manually or by AE-lock, if you are only using it for snapshots, say your kids with a sunset behind them then night portrait mode on SCENE will do the job for you.
Its really a situation based problem though i would recommend a flash diffuser as you will rarely us bounce flash with fill in and direct flash can bleach colour from most subjects.

diffuser's are available for about £5-10 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxim-Diffu...sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1339005728&sr=8-2-spell
i can't find a useful tutorial online.

Hope this helps,
Oliver

Thank you guys!
I actually already have a diffuser and those exact triggers.
What I don't know is how to make fill-flash "happen"
