External microphone-stereo or mono?

I just bought a D5100 and want to use a Seinheiser wireless microphone plugged into the camera's external mic setup. When I import the footage into Final Cut Pro, the audio from the Seinheiser is mono from only the left speaker, but the built-in camera mic is stereo.
How do I get stereo from the external mic setup?

It should have been stereo. You must have plugged it in to the head phone jack instead of the mic jack. It happens.

Is your Sennheiser Wireless mic a stereo mic? Most mics are mono. The plug on the mic should look like the one in the picture if it's stereo. If your mic is mono then you will only hear it on one channel.

The built in mic only records in Mono, to get stereo you have to use a external mic, check that the plug is inserted fully into the socket, if it's not, it will more than likely record on one channel only ... and make sure the plug has 3 segments for stereo and not just two, which will be a Mono plug ...
