I have seen in Barnes and Nobel several non-Nikon manuals for the D5100...anyone have one and has a suggestion about usefulness?

Also saw a "cheat-sheet" (folding plastic)for the camera, but now can't remember where I saw it...anyone have a site where it can purchased?

Tell me why you would want or need a non Nikon manual....Do they read it for you...

...like.. "Nikon D5100 for Dummies"? I can't see a reason why one would need that. Waste of money IMHO. Grab the extended manual from Nikonusa.com and read it all the way through. It explains more than the manual that came with the camera and has the same info that all those books do. But in reality, that only gets you so far. Play with things, explore, waste a few charges on just shooting for the hell of it and experiment. That's how I learned the ins and outs. There is no "cheat sheet" for photography unless of course you're perturbed as I still am about them menus. I'll admit they are confusing, more so than they should be..

Actually I got a copy of David Busch's Book on the 5100 and it's been fantastic, its informative I have learnt heaps and its well written. I have to say that the 5100 is my first digital slr though.

I have the same book for the D3100. It's well worth it. Whatever the question, the answer is in there somewhere.

Nothing wrong with wanting to learn by reading, but learning by practice is that much better. As many have said, just pick up your camera at go at it. Experiment. I did by DLSR photog for dummies and it has helped me out alot. Though, nothing beats going out there and taking shots. Apply what you learn. Though, no book will turn you into a pro photog.
