Try using a FULLY CHARGED battery and see what happens.

Just a thought. :)

To further explain.
What you are seeing through the viewfinder is a startup error code. Ordinarily, I would make a smartass remark like "Its Broke!", but in this case you have already stated that the camera has been setting in a bag for the past 2 weeks. You have not stated how old the camera is nor how much charge was left in the battery when you put it away.
So, the easiest thing to do is to fully charge the battery and try again.
With a fully charged battery, you may be able to complete the startup sequence and avoid repairs that may or may not ne covered under warranty.

Hope this helps.

Have you thought about following the manual's instructions to do a camera factory default reset? This is what I would try before sending it in. If it does not work, than I guess it'll have to be sent to the camera hospital. :(

If you haven't updated your firmware yet, then it's time you did. Other than that, I suggest you take it to a Nikon repair shop and see what they tell you. I don't know what else anyone here can tell you. We can only advise so much. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out, OK? :)

The same thing happen to me, I tried everything but the only solutions was to send it to the after sales service.
For you information, black screen happen 1 month after I bought it, I sent it to the after sales service, 4 month later it happens AGAIN !!!!! (during Christmas and New Year Eves..) I bought a Nikon D5100 6 month ago (4 month with me, 2 with the after sales service). On top of that they cannot exchange it, just fix it but as they did it once and it did not worked... And then, in few month when my camera is gonna have problem, the warranty would not be effective anymore... who s gonna pay and how much ???? I m so angry !!!

OK, first of all...where do you live? US warranties are different than Canadian warranties.

Next...you say you brought it back to after sales service?? What is that? Are they a certified Nikon repair center?

Next...'they' told you they can't replace it, just fix it?? I don't think so! Nikon will replace a defective product if a certified Nikon repair facility can't fix the problem.

Solution: talk to someone from Nikon directly. Go online to their website and look up http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/238

Register your camera and provide as much detail as you can about your problem.

Fotojack,
1/ I live in France

2/ I sent it back to Nikon, I don't know the exact name of the place but if you have a problem with your camera you have to send back to this address, it is the Nikon repair center in Paris.

3/ They fix my problem in august but the same thing happen AGAIN in december and they don t want to replace it. They just fix it.

4/ I talked to a lot of person from Nikon but no one is moving a little finger, they are just telling me that they cannot do anything else than fix the problem.

5/ My camera is already registered on the website since the beginning.

I m affraid that this problem would happen again, when my warranty would be over. At that time I will have to pay to fix my camera !! this is so unfair !! This is a very bad experience for me and Nikon.

What can I do ??

Thank you for your replies

Well, the only solution that comes to mind is a firmware upgrade. Have you checked what version of firmware your camera has? Does it need a firmware upgrade? If so, you can get the upgrade and instructions from the Nikon website. Other than that, I don't know what else you could do if you can't get any help from Nikon directly. I sincerely hou can get your problem resolved. Let us know how it turns out.

Firmware has nothing to do with this technical problem !! if I don t upgrade it my camera will be broken ! No it s not possible. The problem is not coming from the fact that my camera is broken, this might happen, the problem is coming from Nikon, when I call them, they cannot do anything for your except fixing the camera, but concerning exchanging it, they cannot take the decision, by letter it is (also) totally useless, I sent 3 letter but 0 reply !!!
PFF Nikon is not the same as before !! Nikon quality decrease, let s spread the word !

Is it possible that you turn the camera off while it is still writing to the card? A friend of mine had this happen and it created a problem.

In Canada, we have consumer's protection laws that if a company tries to fix a problem and it returns more than twice afterwards, you can get a new one. But you do have to push the company to do so and sometimes even take them to small claim court. I wonder if France has something like this to protect buyers from big companies?

Best of luck with Nikon

I also bought with my D5100 with the extended warrenty that covers damage from dropping it even in water. But this black screen thing does not sound good. I just updated my firmware and I think it would be impossible to do with a blank or black live view screen.

If you use a lens with a mechanical aperture setting, make sure that it's still locked on the smallest size setting. If it got knocked loose, it will produce the Err message and the camera will not activate the shutter until something sidesteps the process, like using the lens on Manual or triggering the AF-Lock.

Hi Maxim, just a little word about your answer. Before answering to posts, have a look at when they were posted and when was the last answer given to it. In this case, you're answering to a year old thread. This means that the original poster probably has gotten the answer he was looking for, otherwise the post would still be alive and the discussion would be continuing.

Welcome to Nikonites.

At the same time, this is interesting info and a possible solution for newcomers like me to just know about. Else I agree, necro-ing threads is a bad time.
