Can I monitor my pictures on a computer as I take them?

I was watching to a professional photographer taking pictures of orchids the other day. As he took each picture, the image appeared on his laptop. The camera was tethered to the laptop by a cable. I didn’t ask what type of cable he was using. I’d like to do the same with my Nikon D5100. My camera has a connection port for HDMI, GPS and a standard AV-Output. I have the cable for the AV output (It came with the camera), but I don’t know if/how I can take a photo and have it appear on my laptop. Does anyone know if this is possible with the D5100 and how I can do it? Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that with an eye-fi memory card, and a wireless compatable computer, you can also achieve this.
We use them in both camera's at work and a pc running the communications software. I've found it's takes about 5 or 10 seconds to download the photo once it's taken.

Nikon Camera Control Pro and view nx. Control pro lets you set aperture, shutter speed, etc, take the picture, from the computer and then displays it via view NX on the screen. Works pretty well.

You could also get an eye-fi sd card. So long as I'm in my wifi network at home, anything I snap automatically gets sent to my iPad/Mac/PC (depends what's set up) and it works pretty well. Search this forum to find the eye-fi thread

If you get an eye fi Pro x2 it has a Direct mode that needs no network, it kind of sets one up itself. I have one and use it in direct mode and set it up to download to my Android tablet out in the field anywhere.

Direct Mode: instant uploads | Eye-Fi

I just tested LR4 with my D700 last night. I was disappointed that it wouldn't go into live-view so that I could see the image before I took it, bit it did store the captured images in my laptop. I was also surprised that it didn't save the captured images in my media card!

It should be known that you can simply hook up the HDMI output to a screen and see the shots instantly directly from the camera if you have an HDTV nearby. This is instant instead of taking a few seconds and doesn't require any expensive stuff (just a mini HDMI adapter or cable .. monoprice has them for less than $5).

You can also employ "Live Preview Mode" which allows you to view what the camera sees in real-time as your preparing your shot from your HDTV. It's very cool.

Hey guys, can I also do the same for my videos in real time? For instance when I am in the process of recording a video, can I zoom in, for instance using the computer instead of the camera itself?

Welcome to the forum,

If you need to zoom in, you will have to do that manually,

Hi,

Does anyone know if Sofortbild 1.5 will support Live View for D5100 on a Mac? I'm able to view my images on the software after I take them (shooting tethered), but when I press the play icon in the Live View screen, I only see gray on the computer and my ability to adjust settings on my camera goes away as well.

Thanks!

Live View works with CMOS sensors. so it should work with D700. If it does not try Easy to use, free solution for complex camera control | digiCamControl software. It works perfectly with my D3300 and desktop.

Digicam also stores directly to the computer and not to the card in the camera. In fact that it does not store in camera results in the serial number of the images increasing only when you shoot without tethering. That is if I started digicam after DSC2345 and then shot 100 images, then when I start again with the camera the image will be DSC2346 and not DSC 2446!
