issues with my 5100

I have a 5100 that is probably 6 years old. I have taken at least 6,000 pics with it.

Something is wrong with it.

I had it out recently taking pictures on the ice at an ice rink. The camera would not fire. no matter the setting it would not take the pic. I do not remember getting any error.

when I took it off the viewfinder view and looked at it through lcd screen it would take the pic, but it was very slow.

another time I took it to a graduation and tried to take pics. It was very slow and the lighting and focus seem to be a little off.

just now I took pics in the room I am sitting in (low light) and it fired and took pics just fine.

any ideas what to check or do?

If there a factory reset option?

Restoring Default Settings (Page 58 of the online manual)
The camera settings listed below and on page 59 can be restored to default values by holding the Menu and Info buttons down together for more than two seconds (these buttons are marked by a green dot). The information display turns off briefly while settings are reset.
Page 58/59 of the online manual contains more detailed info on this.

Ok, so a factory reset didn't seem to change anything.

also I noticed I my camera won't shoot in continuous shutter mode. it will only take a single shot.

Failure to fire without a message is usually when the camera does not see focus. Switch your lens to Manual focus. I don't know what lens you have, but it should have an af/m switch. Switching it to M will tell your camera not to worry about focus. If that works, switch it back to af and try it. Make note if the camera is attempting to focus. You can just half press your shutter and listen/watch for the focus motor. See if the motor is attempting to focus and never finds it or see if it never moves at all. Try removing and reinstalling your lens. Make sure it clicks into place. Check that it is secure by gently trying to tighten/loosen it while you are not pressing the release button. If you have another lens, try it.
I suspect your lens is not focusing. Sometimes randomly pointing the camera around lets it see something in focus and the camera will fire on those occasions. Otherwise, it does not see focus and won't fire.
