LCD goes blank when I plug in remote control

Hi folks. First-time poster. When I was setting up for the solar eclipse on Monday, after not using my D5100 with a remote for a few months - suddenly the LCD no longer works when I have a remote control plugged in on the side. It stays black, no matter what buttons I press. Has anyone experienced this? If I unplug the remote, everything is back to normal. Is there a setting that controls this?

Is there a reset-to-factory function on the camera? (Sorry, I'm emailing from work). I THINK I have the latest firmware, but will check this when I get home.

    Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to the Forum. Not sure about your problem, but could the remote be triggering the shutter when you plug it in. In other words, could it be stuck on?

    Howdy and welcome to Nikonites!!!

The behavior you described seems to be a common failure mode for some 3rd party remotes. If you are able to test with a Nikon remote, or test your remote with another body, it should help narrow down where the problem is occurring.

Thanks for the replies (is this website always so sluggish? Takes me forever to log on and reply! I just typed this message and clicked Submit and it froze and did nothing). The remote is a Phottix Mini which doesn't seem to be available any more. It's always worked fine for years, but now the LCD goes dark. I have an infrared one whose battery has died (I'm assuming, because it's not working and I haven't used it in years), so maybe I will just have to revert to using that one, or get a wired Nikon remote.

The Phottix remote is not triggering the shutter unless I press it, just like it's supposed to do. I checked the firmware and it's 1.02.

Re: LCD goes blank when I plug in remote control

Well, it turns out cwgrizz was right! The remote trigger was stuck in the half-pressed position, so the LCD was going dark. If I pressed it all the way, it would take a photo, but it wasn't returning to it's fully unpressed position. Once I unstuck it, it's back to normal. Thanks, all!

Glad Walt's answer was able to help you identify the problem. As for the forum, no it usually isn't slow, but we've been experiencing some glitches lately. Hope that doesn't keep you away!
