Time lapse question

Wondering if anyone has experience with using an external intervalometer with d5100? My question specifically is. If I get an external instead of using the on board, will I be able to change camera setting between intervals? With the internal intervalometer I am forced to shut camera off, turn back on, adjust shutter speed or aperture etc. then reactivate intervalometer with several steps through. Which is forcing me to use a minimum of 10 sec intervals when trying to shoot "holy grail" time lapses. I need to get down to 3 sec. Any thoughts?

Many of the external interval timers have the camera in Bulb mode, and then they control the shutter time remotely, from the timer menu. That would not help. There are many brands of relabled Nikon MC-36 knockoff interval timers available cheap, maybe $20, which work quite well, but which do use camera Bulb mode.

I don't have a D5100, but I would have thought just changing camera shutter speed between intervals ought to work with camera interval timer? This does work on a D800. The shutter speed does not show in top LCD in interval timer mode, but it shows in the viewfinder, and can be changed between intervals.
