Backing up photos when on a trip

Hi all:

I am going on a trip without my laptop and I want to backup my photos off my D5100. What options do I have? The wifi plug-in that Nikon offers to wirelessly remove photos and put on one's phone is not compatible. Perhaps I can find a cable to go from my camera to my phone? Or, if I have a chip reader I could remove the chip and add photos to external hard drive? Looking for ideas - thanks!

Lots of cards so you don't have to reformat any. And use both slots if you camera is so equipped.

Also, a laptop and a large portable hard drive gives me a real warm and fuzzy feeling.

WD does make a external hard drive that will read directly from your SD card so it will back up your cards without a computer. Forget about backing up to a phone That is just not a good idea

Such a great question Casey -- I've wondered about the same thing and so far have no solution, though I plan to check out Don's suggestion here. It would be nice to back up my shots each night in the hotel room. I recall losing various rolls of Kodachrome at Kodak/Kodalux labs over the years and wish to avoid a high-tech repeat of lost digital shots.

I would suggest either this Western Digital Passport Wireless or an external, USB-powered hard drive connected to a laptop.

The drive mentioned serves both roles and I posted some of information a while back. But I have been very pleased with it while traveling and I use it home as well. It has a lot of uses that I haven't explored, like a media streaming hub if you so choose.

Thanks for your response. My issue is that my camera doen't have a wifi capability, so how would I use the wireless external drive? Unfortunately my D5100 doesn't have that (to my mind). So, am I not understanding something here? Thank you!

The best was already suggested. Get a nice, hard sd card wallet and a bunch of cheaper SD cards. Unless you ALWAYS shoot bursts, a slower card is just fine. For a long time with my D800, I used my Sony 40MB/s 32GB and it was perfectly fine. I don't shoot bursts much so I honestly haven't noticed a difference with my much faster cards. 32GB 90MB/s Sony cards are $11.51 on Amazon and I'm sure you can get even cheaper ones but Sony has always been great for me and Amazon often has SD cards on sale.
