The D5100 is Nikon's replacement for the D5000. They've added several new upgrades to the camera that put it right between the D3100 and D7000. Here are the specs:
  • 3-inch, 921,000-dot Super-Density horizontal type Vari-Angle LCD Monitor
  • In-camera Special Effects Mode
  • In-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range)
  • Stunning Full 1080p HD Movies with Full Time Autofocus
  • High Resolution 16.2 MP DX-format CMOS sen

And the new models continue, on and on and on. This one has pretty good specs over the one it replaces, not a giant leap. If I had a D5000 and wanted to upgrade I'd go to the D7000.

I agree also, had the HDR function been more than it is, I would have upgraded from my D3100. At this point the D7000 is the next logical upgrade for me.
