I currently have D5100 with 55-200 and I have realized that 200 is not enough zoom many time so I am looking into 55-300.

For image quality which one is better ? 55-200 OR 55-300 ?

I know 70-300 is much better but it is more expensive which I can't afford right now.

Also - Is $200 a good price for 55-300mm AF-S ?

Yes....the 55-300 is good....but you didn't say whether the $200 is for a new or used lens? If used, I'd say it's a fair deal....new would be a better deal. I have the 55-300 lens and I like it!

Look for the thread started by our colleague Siamthai - he recently purchased a 55-300mm and is very happy with it.
It's a good lens, in terms of quality pretty much the same like 55-200mm but, of course, for a 100mm "longer".

OK, here's that thread: http://goo.gl/u7oiFF

I have the 55-300mm and love it, I believe the build quality is better than the 200 including a metal mount rather than plastic.
If you get the 200mm, you'll always be wondering what the 300 is like... If you get the 300, you can always just use 200mm of it!!

Thank you guy for your prompt answers and advise - it is quite helpful. I just bought 55-300.

When I have extra money, I will upgrade to 70-300 as people say it is better in quality of image.

70-300 VR. 55-x are all meh in a long run and the cost of 55-300 to 70-300 is fairly close while the performance is miles apart. FYI, 70-300s are ~$300 used, in good condition, so only 100 more than what you mentioned as a potential limit in price.

Looks about right. Camp some ebay or try our marketplace, FredMiranda, etc. My personal experience was that when I didn't have quite enough for one, they were all over ebay for $300 on the dot. When I did muster up the money, there were none (most ended up ~350), but scouting other forums I found the deal I wanted.
