I am a newbie but need good and details / sharp images. Is it worth upgrading from D5100 to D5200 since d5200 offers more megapixels ? I am assuming that more megapixels means more detailed images

Please advise !

More megapixels don't necessarily mean sharper images...You may need more storage for the larger files although it is not all that expensive these days

More megapixels means detail is retained when enlarged.
If you want sharper images invest in good glass that can also be used in later upgrades.

Ha - listen to ME, a newbie and all! :D

Anyway that is how I understand it to be and as i don't print large my 5100 is better than perfect for me.

More megapixels gets your more resolution, not sharpness; those are two very different things.

Also, no. Upgrading from the 5100 to the 5200 would not be a great decision unless someone is practically giving that 5200 away. if you're going to upgrade from the 5100, get the 7100. That's the only upgrade from the 5100 that makes any real sense in my opinion. You could make a good argument for the the 7000 but if you're in that deep, spend the extra few bucks on the 7100 and don't look back.

Sit on money and try to nab a used d600 without oil spots on sensor now that 610 is out. Most other ones won't be enough of an upgrade to justify the money thrown IMO.

Learning how to properly use your camera, how to properly hold your camera, and learning a bit of photography theory will go much farther in your quest for sharper images than a next newer model will. Even jumping to a D7100 won't guarantee better images. As mentioned, getting a better lens may yield some results, but nothing if not used properly.
