Looks like I will never have the latest and greatest :)

I just got the D5100 for Christmas and I love it. It is replacing my D40X. My camera of choice would have been the 7000, but they are still out of my price range. Just glad to have what I have now and wanted to vent I guess :). It is awsume what I can do now...cool:cool:

Some of my best shots were from the D5100, it is an excellent camera. Where in the Adirondacks are you? I love shooting foliage up there!

I have the D7100, but the D5100 has made most of my best photos.

Don't chase camera bodies. Pursue great glass and your technique.

Few days ago I took 1685 photos on my trip/vacation with my D5100 and the Nikon 16-85mm. Just a few shots at night I used the tripod. I have to say I love the 5100 and its performance in low-light and it is exactly for my needs as a snap-shooter.

I had in mind to buy for this trip a D7000 or D90 now I am glad I didn't. Now my daughter benefits from it. She get some present on Chines New Year which is on 31 st January 2014.

Congratulations! Nothing better than "New Camera Smell"

Aint that the truth!!

I agree with Moab Man - the camera won't make you a good photographer. And whatever each of us are using, there is always going to be someone else with something better. It's a great camera. Enjoy getting better acquainted with it. Looking forward to seeing some of your images :)

Nomadrider,

Don't worry about "catching up". Enjoy your own photographic journey. Who knows, you may get to where everyone else is trying to go by taking a different route. Don't follow a crowd, and for goodness sakes, don't take the same shots everyone else is.

Experiment, take photographic chances (safe ones), learn, succeed, and yes embrace "failure" as it tends to teach us some extremely valuable lessons. (As long as we are smart enough to learn from them.) You can do all of that with a D5100

From all I heard the 5100 is a nice camera. A 5100 was my goal as well;. But settled with the 3100. Which is also a good camera. I'll be moving up some day. But for now the 3100 is a perfect starting point for me. I've been up your way before. Beautiful country.

I considered my D5100 a steal when I bought it (new but 2 years old) for a smidge over £400 with the kit lens. Brand new it was probably close to if not more than double that!

I find it, as a novice, a great camera. Taking some great pictures with it that far exceed what I could do with the previous camera, a P&S Canon.

Enjoying learning all that there is to learn about Manual photography as well!
