Did I make an error in lens choice?

Hello all! Need some help, here! I have a D5100 that was an upgrade from a D40. Love the camera but soon realized the kit glass wasn't gonna cut it for what I needed so I purchased an AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8G prime lens. Love it and get great results! Soon I realized I really needed a short telephoto for low light conditions for the many concerts I attend. I thought I had found the deal I was looking for (read small budget here) and settled on a Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm f/2.8 for a really good price. My research led me to understand, although now I'm not sure, it would function on the D5100 DX body. It arrived today and although used, it appears to be in excellent condition. It attached easily, turned on the camera and immediately have an error message that says "Lock lens aperture ring at minimum aperture (largest f/-number." What does this mean and have I made an error with this lens? When I look through the view finder and depress the shutter button halfway I see f EE flashing and it will not release the shutter.

What's happening here? I appreciate your responses!

It means you have to first lock the aperture ring on the lens at the smallest setting so the computer can take of the function of the aperture. Otherwise the camera cannot manipulate the lens

This lens will not auto focus on the D5100 since it does not have the built in focus motor. You will have to shoot in manual focus mode. If you can send it back I would. Look for a lens that is compatible with the D5100.

Oh....Don's right. I forgot about that. In some camera's like the D7000 you have to lock these D lenses in order for the lens to work but in this case it will not autofocus and perhaps you should consider returning it.

It is an FX lens that will work on the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, & D5100 but will not focus automatically. Manual focus should work OK.

I had thought that perhaps it would not autofocus on the D5100 but I felt I could live with it in the short term. I do use the autofocus occasionally in certain instances but mostly manually focus anyways. I did lock the aperture ring at the minimum (f/22) but the error message persists and the shutter still will not release!

Thank you, John! I was under the same impression and felt I could still use this lens effectively. However, this does not seem to be the case. Even after locking the lens in the minimum aperture (f/22) my camera still shows the error message and will not shoot.

I recently bought my first new lens for my D5100 and did a lot of research into what works and what doesn't. The focus motor is a must. I'd also like to back up what other people are saying, and that is try and get it sent back. If it's not working then it's not working so you have every right to.

I finally settled on the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS HSM (hsm on sigma is the built in motor!). I've been extremely happy with it, a huge improvement on the kit lens I had :)

But yeah, if it's not working for you, try and get it sent back.

Thanks, Vinnydude! I've pretty much resolved myself to the fact I need to send it back. The seller has indicated he would take it back as well. Thanks for your input. My search continues! ;)
