Any clues to what happened to my D5100? Does it need to go in for service?? Worked fine yesterday.

It looks like a stuck mirror. Remove the lens, put it in manual mode and look inside to see what's happening. Try a slow shutter speed (1/10) to really have time to watch.

Good luck.

The autofocus works, but won't snap a picture in any mode but manual. That's what I get in manual. I was wondering if it may be the mirror. Can that be something I can do myself or does it need service?

You post came in while I was typing. I'm afraid to touch anything on the camera.

That looks exactly like my camera did when the shutter broke and had to be replaced. So I'm guessing it's more than just stuck.

Did you, by any chance, buy your camera with a Discover card? The reason I ask is that Discover automatically doubles the manufacturers warranty so instead of only having a 1 yr full warranty you end up with 2 yrs worth.

I guess I take to many pictures!!

What's the shutter actuation count? D5100s are rated at 100,000 but that's based on lab testing under perfect conditions. Like most statistics, take it with a grain of salt and if you don't want to tinker with the mirror send it to Nikon for what needs to be done.

No, paid by check at Costco. Haven't had it a year yet, so at least I'm still
under warranty.
