camera saving files to memory card

Hi all, wonder if anyone else has this issue with their D5100. Whenever I put my memory card into my card reader to save the photos to my computer, there are loads of different folders being created. Instead of saving all files into 1 single folder, the camera keeps creating new folders, some folders have a few pictures (4 or 5) others have a couple of hundred... can't figure out why, and its really annoying, because some of the files have the same name (Example DSC_8222 will be 2 different photos in 2 different folders...

I format my memory cards before every shoot....

Any ideas?

Normally it will save photos into a new folder based on the date... so how many will be however many you took since the last download.. You can change that via your download software...

Repeat file name is set by your camera... It is restarting each download (or folder). You can fix that it never repeats...

Go into Menu
Go into Custon setting
Seletc Shooting Disply (D)
Under D3, File number sequence, set it to ON
That will number from last photo no matter the folder or card...

(off will renumber every new folder or re-format of card)

These shots would all be taken on on the same day, so its not a case of the camera arranging them into folder by date, I did some shooting tonight on a clean card (formatted) and theyre scattered in 11 folders!

What are the folders titled?? Did you find the menu item for the number sequence?

Folders are all label 1XXD5100, X being numbers increasing such as 101D5100, 102D5100, 103D5100, 104D5100. And yes, file number sequence is set to ON already....

I have never had or seen that problem. Is it that way in the camera or is the upload software creating them? What upload software are you using? When you put the card in and before you let it transfer look at the card in Explorer and see how it is set up.

I don't know if this will help any, but here goes. I don't use software of any kind to upload pics from my memory card into my computer. On my tower, I installed a multi card reader. I take the card out of my camera, plug it into the appropriate slot (eg: CF card into CF slot). Then I click on My Computer (Windows XP Pro). The drive letter will show up among all the others (eg: H: Nikon D200). I click on that drive letter and view all the shots on the card. I can then save the ones I want to whatever folder I choose. Simple and effective, and never a problem with software.

Hi, I do it the same way as fotojack. The only difference is I don't have a card reader, I just connect my camera to my computer with the usb cord that came with my camera Go to my computer and click on that drive letter and save in folders I create. Seems to work ok for me.

Is using the usb cable plugged into the camera not the recommended way to transfer files? In ~15 years I haven't had a problem, but if it can cause issues I could remove the SD card each time. #creatureofhabit

Recommended? No, not really. It's just one way of doing it. However, you're using your cameras batteries to do it. Much easier to get a card reader and transfer them to your computer. Much faster, too.

I do it just like you fotojack, its the camera which is creating different folders, not the computer.... COuld it be because I delete frames on camera? so it messes up the numbering?

I use the USB cable most of the time and I use ViewNX2 to transfer all my files and really like it that way. It is fast for me and I get to set up the naming convention for the folders and files.

Is this now you are doing it? If so check your setup in ViewNX2 and see if you got something clicked that should not be clicked

Maybe it's because you're re formatting the card on every use. You should only need to format it once before its first use.
