I found a patch that'll allow you to do these things with your D5100:
  • Remove Time Based Video Restrictions
  • NEF Compression Off
  • NEF Compression Lossless
  • NEF Oversampling, to allow testing by Astro folks - BETA
  • Jpeg Compression - Quality (vs. Space)
  • Non-brand Battery

Do the following at your own risk

Here's how to do it:
  1. Grab the latest firmware file from Nikon
  2. Run the exe or dmg file - this will create a folder in the same directly that the exe file is saved in called D5100Update. It will contain D5100_0101.bin
  3. Upload the firmware file (D5100_0101.bin) here, and generate the patched firmware.
  4. Put the patched firmware on your sd card in the base directory (top level)
  5. Insert the memory card into the camera's memory card slot and turn on the camera.
  6. Select Firmware version from the camera's setup menu and follow instructions displayed to upgrade the firmware.
  7. After the upgrade is complete, turn the camera off and remove the memory card.
  8. Access the Firmware version item in the camera's setup menu to confirm that the firmware has been upgraded.
  9. After confirming the firmware version, turn the camera off and leave it off for five seconds or more before using it.

I'm into patching, running various patched mobile phones, but just be aware Nikon won't honour your warranty of it goes wrong.

Here's another way to use a NON Nikon battery with the 5100.
Go to Amazon and buy the $27.95 battery grip and install it on your 5100.
(You're going to LOVE it):sentimental:
Make sure your camera is off and insert an official, OBSCENELY PRICED ::what:: Nikon battery and turn the camera on.
After you see on the view screen that the battery has been accepted, turn the camera off and then insert an extremely AFFORDABLE after market battery available on Amazon (I actually bought a couple for less than $4 each but now the cheapest seems to be around $13), in the second slot, next to the OBSCENELY PRICED::what::Nikon battery and turn the camera back on.
Now, if you WANT to, you can turn the camera back off, take out the OBSCENELY PRICED ::what::eek:fficial Nikon battery and REPLACE it with another AFFORDABLE after market battery.
Turn your camera back on and SMILE:D. The fully charged cheapie batteries will last JUST as long. At least mine do.

The trick is that after removing both batteries you always have to insert an official OBSCENELY PRICED ::what::Nikon battery first so you can "fool" the camera body that reads the chip Nikon puts in THEIR battery to FORCE :pirate:you to pay for their OBSCENELY PRICED battery even after you've shelled out hundreds or thousands of dollars to them for their camera body and lenses.
Only a moron believes that there is something magical inside Nikon's battery that justifies the asinine price.
You'll also save a bundle by buying the aftermarket remote control on Amazon for $5.25 vs Nikon's $23.99 rip off price.

Though, grip makes it waaay to bulky IMO. I went that route at first, but nikon-patch definitely made life much easier.

Seems like a lot of hoops to be able to use an inferior product. I've never had success using aftermarket batteries in my electronics from my Sony handycam from the late 90s through my Motorola DroidX a few years ago. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

I made a video tutorial for the hack so that new users loose that initial fear of doing this, since it is awesome and very easy!

There is a hack, developed by the guys from Nikon Hacker, that allows D5100, D3100 and D7000 users to enable some really cool extra features!
It works perfectly and increases the video capabilities of the camera tremendously!

The Patched firmware enables you to remove time based video restrictions, Liveview manual ISO and shutter speed control, clean HDMI & LCD Liveview output, to remove NEF compression, to disable Nikon "star eater" (Nikon D70 Versus Canon 10D), to use third party batteries and more.

I made a video tutorial for it, since I had a little hard time gathering all the necessary information to get it done.
It's fast and easy! Give it a try!

I hope this helps new hack users like me!
Regards!

Is the firmware hack compatibke with all the Nikon D5100 around the world. I am asking this because sometimes there are different versions of gadgets for different countries ..

Personally I would never suggest hacking the firmware in your camera. You stand the chance of bricking your camera.

There are some misconceptions about hacking, canon make enough of there firmware available to the public for Canon hacks to be fairly safe,Nikon are not that open so in there case i would go with Don on this, dont risk it.
