Back up for my D5100

I have a D5100, I like it alot. I would like to get a second body to keep a different lens on. Which would be a good back up? A D80, D200 or a D300? I have seen all of those locally on Craigslist from anywhere between $300 to $400. I mostly photograph outside, birds, gators, etc.

my vote would be the D300 will have a similar photo look.

the D200 and D80 have the same CCD sensor (instead of the CMOS), which well personally, I like, but will be different than your 5100 in look.

The D300 will also be built like a tank, and have features that well, you will love.

I think the D300 is not going to happen. I think I will try to get the D200 for $250 or so. It still seems like a great camera from all I have read about it.

Just out of curiosity- 51 is typically a backup for something better. And changing lenses isn't really that hard to spend 250-450 simply not to have to. If I were you, I'd save up for 7100 and then have 51 be its backup.

My opinion only: why buy a D200?? That means you are going to have to invest in CF cards. Buy a factory refurb of something a bit more current or try and find a D80 or a D90. The D80 will give you the same photo IQ as the D200.

This might be a dumb question but is there anything wrong with the D200? (Aside from the CF cards.) It still seems like a very good camera.

My 2 cents. I recently bought a D200, my other body is a D60. I love the feel of the D200 in my hand, it is a solid body. It feels like it will last forever. I love the user interface, the controls are easy to use and everything is at your fingertips. I won't go into whether this is the right body to get or not, but I don't think you would be disappointed in the D200 and in some respects you may like certain things about it more then your D5100.

For the right price and condition it is still an amazing body.

Well, its still DX, it's much, much older and thus won't produce snaps like even 5100. You do get weather sealing, and higher FPS, but at the cost of overall lower image quality limits and having to re/invest into more and more useless CF cards.
