I finally gave in and now have doubts about my decision...

I love my D750 and my old D200 (and the Nikon film bodies that I just can't seem to let go of), but every time I read about the D500, I feel like I should get one before they're gone.

I ordered a new one from B&H last night. :)

CONGRATS!! I don't think you'll be disappointed. I don't have any experience with full frame cameras myself, but from all I've seen - including the D500 pics from other members here - you're not gonna be taking a step down in resolution from your (admittedly terrific) D750. And you'll get that 1.5x crop factor! I can't believe how fast mine catches focus in low light particularly, and the subject tracking is excellent. A baby D5 indeed, and no surprise considering how many of the internals are shared. Not to mention rugged as hell.

Do I sound like I'm happy for you? I am! All the best with it, and looking forward to hearing your impressions of that beast once you get some clicks on it!

CONGRATS!!

Thank you! Your level of enthusiasm about the D500 seems typical (well, maybe you're in the upper percentile... :)) of owners and is one of the big reasons I decided to take the plunge. A lot of people have heaped very high praise on the model with more than a few calling it the "best DSLR ever."

The renown autofocus system was something I wanted to have. (The backlit buttons sounded pretty appealing as well!)

I always appreciate rugged build quality. When I put down the D750 and then pick up the D200, I always notice how solid and well-built it feels. The subtle bit of reassurance, confidence, or whatever it is, that it provides feels good. The D750 certainly doesn't feel flimsy, but the D200 has that brick-like, solid feel of my old F2S. I hear the D500 is similarly solid and hope that's true.

It is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday and I'll post my impressions as soon as I get the chance.

Congrats, it's an amazing camera and I'm sure you will love the machine gun trigger ;)

It's funny... I keep the shooting mode on my cameras set to "continuous high" to be ready for anything and I think the only times I've ever taken bursts have been by accident. But when it's appropriate or advantageous to do so, I forget the capability exists.

Maybe the D500 will make me more trigger-happy...

I have both the D750 and D500. For wildlife and when the extra reach is needed, I choose the D500 first. For everything else, I go with the D750. Both are excellent, and both have their advantages. The low light capabilities of the D750 are a little better than the D500 - but it definitely isn't a huge difference by any means. High ISO's (noise) are closer to the D610 than the D7200 from my own experience.

The only thing I don't care for about the D500 is its layout. All my other Nikon DSLR bodies have used a similar layout to the D750. The D500 doesn't have U1 or U2 which I always programmed or even a mode button to change between Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, or Manual Mode. The U1 and U2 program modes allowed me to quickly switch between two very different settings (Aperture Priority with AF-S and shutter button for focusing while U2 is set for Manual Mode with BBF and AF-C with Auto-ISO).

One advantage of the D500 over the D750 is it has the AF Fine Tune. It can automatically calibrate lenses. The D750 requires the user to input a calibration value after determining the AF based on results of visually eyeballing images.

Here's a sample from yesterday with my D500, 300mm f/4 PF, and 1.4x TC.

EDIT: and of course now I see a spot on my sensor that I missed during editing. :beguiled:

The only thing I don't care for about the D500 is its layout.

After watching a LOT of YouTube reviews, I got the impression this may be the biggest complaint. I think I can put up with it without too much frustration.

I have a good selection of lenses and doing the AF Fine Tune on the D750 was tedious and somewhat of a PITA. I'm looking forward to the automation of that feature on the D500.

I do love my D750 very much but I'm excited about experiencing the D500's autofocus capabilities, higher definition LCD touch screen, auto Fine Tune, backlit buttons and rugged build. If the D500 was full frame, I'd probably describe it as having the things I wish my D750 did have or, as a crop frame camera, a wonderful update of my D200. Im thinking I'm going to really like this camera!

Congrats on your newest acquisition. I traded my D750 and all but two of my full frame lenses (kept Nikon AF-P FX 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR and Sigma 100-400mm f/5.0-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary) to MPB for a barely used (4,743 shutter count) D500 and have absolutely no regrets. I believe you'll quickly adapt to the differences in layout between the D750 and D500.

I don't have the touch screen enabled as I'd rather have the battery last longer, but that's just a personal preference.

I was always paranoid about battery life. When I bought my D750, I got a deal on the battery grip so I've had one on it for years. I recently removed it to lighten the camera and improve its fit in my hiking camera bag and realized usually I never even come close to exhausting a single full battery.

How would you compare the rate of the D500's battery consumption to that of the D750? I'm hoping my older D750 batteries will function in the new D500. I have noticed lots of mention of the D500 being battery hungry or being inaccurate in its battery life display and being picky about uinsg third party batteries.

The original battery in the D750 won't last as long as the latest battery for the D500. That said, they both take the same batteries. It's just that the one made for the D500 lasts longer. So I purchased a Nikon replacement battery EN-EL15c. I believe the D750 originally came with either the 'a' or 'b' version. The 'b' version has 1900 mAh / 14 Wh while the 'c' version has 2280 mAh / 16 Wh. The longer lasting battery does take longer to charge due to its specs.

Thanks for the info!

I think I have three of the slightly lower capacity EL-15 batteries ( I can't remember off hand if they're a or b versions) and will have a c version in the new D500, so I should be all set.

I found out this morning that FedEx has changed the delivery date of my package from B&H Photo from tomorrow to today. It's loaded on the truck for delivery. Sometimes, it really irks me when they change the delivery date of a valuable or signature-only package and screw up my plans but, today, it's no problem!

FedEX is my least favorite shipper between UPS, USPS, and Amazon. Around here FedEX routes are privatized so they aren't company owned. Last year many people in my neighborhood watch group had issues with FedEX leaving their packages at wrong addresses. When it happened to me more than once, I called and spoke with a FedEX rep. WHILE on the phone with the rep, I received a delivery notification. So I went to the door while on the phone only to see no package.

So the rep immediately contacted someone on his end, had the driver go back and retrieve the package and deliver it to me. They also followed up and filed a complaint against the driver (who supposedly was one of their best despite the numerous problems in my neighborhood). After going through all of that, the neighborhood complaints about FedEX delivers have stopped.

Another time I had a Target shipment sit undisclosed for one month. When the box finally arrived, it had a gaping hole in the top. FedEX attempted to retape it despite being delivered with a 6" opening. Products that were factory sealed had been opened and other items damaged. Or the time I sent for an Avenger C Stand. The box arrived wet with the top flap completely opened. The stand must have fallen out of the box and was damaged. *I* had to drive that box back to FedEX and take it inside to return it myself - keep in mind the shipping box was at least 5' tall and weighed over 15 pounds. That really ticked me off. Not sure why B&H couldn't issue a pickup for it.

I'm tracking a USPS Priority 2-day Envelope from Florida to Alpharetta Ga right now... It was picked up on April 25th... fully 8 days ago and hasn't been delivered yet. :(

Boy, between the shipping companies and Pouch Pirates. I am almost afraid to order anything delivered!

I never, never order/pay for anything except with a credit card... simply because I can reverse the transaction for when the delivery goes astray... It puts the onus of responsibility back on the retailer instead of the shipper... When the retailer starts getting back-charged fees for reversed charges because the shipper they chose screwed up, the retailers will take a serious interest in seeing that the shippers they use get their products to their customers...

Congrats on your decision. You won't be disappointed. It is an amazing camera. I never had the skill set to fully utilize it. I could not keep up with the critters. But the results have always amazed me.

I have been using PayPal for about 20 years now. If I have a problem they take care of it. They seem to care that you are satisfied with my purchase. Harle

Higher-value FedEx deliveries I try to have rerouted to be delivered to my local Walgreens store 2 blocks away. Before that option became available I would have delivered to the nearest FedEx-Kinkos store 7 miles away. Doing those options I have had no problems with deliveries. If they go to my home, I fully expect it to be tossed onto my porch from 15 feet away and the driver run away. I swear FedEx hires drivers right out of prison.

I was mistaken... the D500 ships with an EL-15b, not EL-15c. I did check the two third-party EL-15 type batteries that I use with my D750 and it has no trouble with them.

Now, I just need some time to play with the new camera!
