Shutter count per photo trip

Just curious how many actuations do you typically shoot when out with your D500 when using for BIF or Wildlife?
I am already finding that with 10FPS in Continuous High , that I am already clocking up several hundred shots everytime I am out with the D500.
I know this camera is rated for 200k actuations, but have many people surpassed this or had a failed shutter before this amount?

My D500 shutter failed at 300,000 actuations, but Nikon replaced it for a reasonable price and it's still going strong. I am almost always well into the hundreds when shooting wildlife, and I've been known to shoot over 3,000 at a good location and the right time of year.

Good to know they can reach 300,000 and I’m not the only one firing off hundreds at a time.

Average around 500 a day, ranging from 100+ to 1500+

SC is 410,125 as of this morning.

You have a good excuse, unlike me as you shoot an average of 500 a day then post about 400 great shots each day ;)

Thanks, but in my dreams. I just did a quick look and over the last three years I've average 32 keepers per day, so a whopping 6.4%. Still enough to clog up the pipes here, I guess.

Depends on the day, Saturday I took 200+. Deleted over 50 on the first look, then deleted a bunch more on the second look. T[FONT=&quot]oday I only took 51 shots. First round 11 were deleted. Haven't done the second round yet.

When I use to hang out at Wakodahatchee I could take over 500 shots in a day during mating season. To many folks there these days with COVID.

6.4% keepers is a pretty good rate. Also, you can't clog the pipes up here. We actually need more posts, not less, if you ask me.

I wouldn't worry about hurting the shutter on a D500 by using it as you enjoy. If it stops working, you get it replaced by Nikon and keep using it or sell it and buy a newer camera. My shooting numbers typically range from the 50-300 on a slow day to up to 2500-3000 on a good day at a good location. But I don't shoot every day, and when I do, I'm usually using at least two cameras.

Given the fairly large membership numbers, why is the forum so quiet and when did this start to happen?

My opinion is that it's slow due to multiple reasons, the one with the biggest impact is restricted travel and activity due to COVID, both mandatory and voluntary. We've also got a changing demographic, and while it may be slower now, it's likely to pick up in the future. Members come and go, and it only takes a small number of active photographers to increase the activity significantly. Maybe you're the one that's going to do this!

I always shot CL with my D7100. I was shocked the first time I hit the shutter on the D500 with the CL setting. I thought I had a machine gun in my hands. Ha! Even at 5fps it really seemed to fly. Anyway, the first day out I fired about 100 shots without breaking a sweat in a very short time. Only a few to call half way keepers. I would hate to see how many shots I would take on a good bird/wildlife day.

Walt, you will get an even bigger shock when you put it into CH ;)
