D500 taking its own pics?

Today is the second time I've run into something unusual. Looking through the images I shot today, the first one is simply a blurry image that is green. It was taken 2 minutes before I took a photo of a birdhouse. The other day I had a couple images of nothing (blurred pics of nothing) that were in the middle of the images I took (those pics have since been deleted). Since it was the first time I've experienced that, I assumed I must have accidentally pushed the shutter button - plus the body had a rain jacket on it so I thought possibly I pressed the shutter accidentally. But today's instance without a rain jacket makes me wonder if something is up with the body.

The only other time I encountered this problem is when I used an SB-28 on a Nikon N70. Based on the flash's serial number, that flash had issues, and both the flash and camera body were repaired under warranty.

Has anyone encountered a D500 that takes an image even when the shutter button isn't pressed? I'm still within the first 30 days here....

More than a couple hundred times have I noticed 'phantom' images that can only be explained by an accidental shutter depression.

The thing is I've never done that with any of my other DSLR bodies so two instances within a few days....

No issues here but I'm only up to about 150 shots:(. I've been surprised by the fast shooting rate and accidentally fired two shots at once. I also had a few unexpected shots in live when I touched the screen. But no mystery shots so far.

Do you have a battery grip mounted? I one carried my camera cross strapped, resting on my left side. When I went through the pics, I had dozens of What the Hell?s -- figured out the grip button was hitting my hip, firing off burst that I couldn't hear. I've also done that just shifting the body to portrait on my tripod when hurried.

No grip - am using a Black Rapid strap and am carrying it the same way I did my D7200. In fact, it is the strap from the D7200.

I have all my 'negligent actuations' when using a strap.

I always use a strap because I had elbow surgery several years ago. As I mentioned, I've never had this issue with any other DSLR no matter what strap. In fact, I own two of these straps. The other is on a D750.

When I don't use my vest to carry either of my camera's and I carry them like you might carry a football I have managed to unknowingly press the shutter and I get some strange pictures.

Let me ask you this, as you walk around is your D500 set up differently than your other cameras? In other words is your D500 generally in AF-C mode with the shutter priority set to Release, whereas before you had it in AF-S with shutter priority set to Focus? If so then it's not so much that the D500 is taking pictures when you don't want them as it is that the other bodies were set in a way that made that more difficult. I get those shots all the time. Sometimes I hear 'em, sometimes I don't.

I have it set up just as I have all my other bodies set with U2. BBF, AF-C with shutter set to release, Manual Mode + Auto ISO. Took the strap off my D7200 to use on this body so it has nothing to do with that. It's a Black Rapid Cross Strap (ambidextrous) which allows me to carry the body/lens combo on my left side. Quite often my left hand is gently holding the body where I would normally hold it (where the left hand normally holds the side of the body). Other times my left hand is holding the lens underneath as it hangs by my side.

Everything I've been doing has been exactly the same as when I used my D7200 in U2 (as well as my D750 in U2).

As Jake said, I've had accidental actuations for sure, and sometimes I was aware of them, others not. Maybe the slightly larger/heavier body just puts the camera in a position where the shutter can be accidentally tripped when the D7200 wouldn't have been? Or, it could be ghosts... :)

We have a garage door opener that randomly shuts or opens the door. We've never figured out why. Fortunately it happens pretty infrequently. These are the things that can drive a person nuts!

Is your touch screen activated? Could it be set to focus and click? That's the first thing that comes to mind. It happened to me with my Fuji X-H1. I had accidentally activated the touch screen. Did I ever mention how much I hate that "Feature"...

No. I turned off the touch screen when I first got the body. Not set to focus and click. It's set to release, not focus.

I used the body today but didn't carry it (just used thru the car window). It didn't happen. I'm not discounting that perhaps it is me causing the issue but am looking at all possibilities. :)
