Battery issue

Nikon EN-EL15A Battery issue. Brand new fully charged shows 84% in D500 and 93% in D7200 ?
Anyone else noticed any discrepancies/issues with the D500 or the A series batteries ?
Perhaps I just got what I paid for, $27 from China !

Cheers, Don

I think that you have been sold a forged battery. If it otherwise works and doesn't get hot during operation, it's probably safe. It most likely won't last very long though.

All the Nikon batteries that I own always show full 100 % after charging. Even very old ones that display "4" meaning end of life. They just deplete quickly.

I think that "honest" 3rd party batteries sold under their own brands are usually okay and very good, but fake/forged ones can be anything. Probably better to avoid in the future. If a $27 battery sets your camera on fire the savings were not worth it.

With my D500, Nikon batteries fresh out the charger sometimes read 95%. Non-Nikon batteries, though, are a crap shoot. They generally don't hold a charge as well, and do not last anywhere nearly as long as a real Nikon battery. For $27 I am pretty sure yours are non-Nikon. There are a lot of counterfeits out there.

The D500 wouldn't even light up with 3rd party batteries when I got my first when it was released. They did a battery exchange for all owners because of it (somewhere on here is a graph of all the various percentages of a battery in a D500 and the same battery in another Nikon). As was said, you often get what you pay for. The original EL-15's would be dead in the D500 and register over 30% in any other camera. Even the newer ones when they are dead will give me 50-70 photos in my D750. It's sucks power so buy accordingly.

D7500 doesn't light up with 3rd party batteries either.. My D7100 is very erratic with the 3rd party one I bought and hardly use..
An EN-El15A in my D7500 will show 97-100% fresh out of the charger.

My D7200 ran well on Wasabi batteries in fact they worked as well as Nikon batteries. But the Z6 only works well on the Nikon batteries and I recently got a bad one Nikon battery. I would be rolling along taking photos and I would get a message saying the shutter was deactivated because the battery needed to be changed and a second later it was OK and the battery was freshly charged. Seemed to be most common when I was using my speed light or trigger for off camera flash. I am one of those guys that likes to have a lot of batteries so it took a bit of time to confirm that I had only one bad battery.

It was a strange issue, but when I replaced the Nikon battery the problem went with it. I still need to contact Nikon service and let them know what I found. I am interested in seeing if they will give me a new battery.

While I only use Nikon brand batteries (am am careful of counterfeits), it appears that Nikon has done a great job with their newer cameras in rejecting third party batteries (and apparently at times even rejecting Nikon batteries).
