Love my D500 but.......

Love my D500 but not at all happy that Nikon UK has just informed me that it is going to costs me about £230 to repair a sticking mirror. The camera is only 18 months old with about 9k to 10k shutter actuations, and it has been well cared for over that period (no heavy handling, drops etc).

I have owned cameras for many decades (Fuji (both of which are still working perfectly well 10 or 11 years later), Nikon (film), Pentax (Film), Praktica (film)) and so not a complete dumbo, and have never had an issue like this with a 'relatively new' camera.

Was I just lucky with the equipment I bought over the years, or did I 'misplace' my faith in modern Nikon equipment?

Anything that is man-made can go wrong, after saying that i think you have been unlucky but also Nikon are a bit tight with 12 months warranty, my current camera comes with 30 months and i can double that for £99

Hi, thanks for the comments. I have looked locally (Cornwall), but have not found anywhere suitable :(. Because the camera is not very old, I also thought in my ignorance, that it would be preferable to have it repaired by the manufacturer!

MikeW, oh how I wish I had 30 months warranty like you!

Just curious, does your credit card company extend warranties on purchases? We get an extra year on ours. You might want to check with them.

I didn't know that was possible.

Depends on the card. We get 1 year added to manufacturer warranties and 90 day price protection on one card. The extended warranty can require you jump thru hoops, particularly with regard to inspection of the item (they wanted me to ship a 40 pound smoker on my dime to the nearest authorized center when a plastic door part broke so it could be inspected at a cost of 5x the cost of the part), but with a camera I suspect that shipping it to the manufacturer would work just fine.

Just within the past 2-3 weeks, I read where some of the credit card companies are pulling back some of their offers. Getting an extended warranty was one of them (although it will vary from bank to bank). Think I read it on a Facebook page from Consumer Reports magazine.

Hi Jake (BackdoorHippie), I do not think the credit card suppliers in the UK offer that service. There is good protection from them if goods do not turn up and/or if they are not fit for purpose, however I will check just to satisfy my own curiosity.

I think you were unlucky, or some usual condition occurred, possibly even just dirt, that requires the complete teardown. If they have to replace the mirror mechanism and all the post assembly calibration and alignment, that is not unreasonable in cost. It is pretty time-consuming.
The D500 has proven to be very reliable and many are operating as new with 300,000 frames. It is one of Nikon's best bodies, along with the D3, D300, and other workhorses. My D90 has 200,000 frames and has been flawless. I needed a focus calibration on my D7000 at 160,000 frames but it was within the 2-year warranty and my D800 needed focus calibration at 150,000 frames and now, 4 years later is still working perfectly, a daily shooter for events, portraiture, and architecture. I don't think my good luck with Nikon is unusual.. Between my cameras, a lot of shots have been taken in harsh conditions.
It is certainly worth the further investment in the D500 to keep it working for years to come.

As a question, how often do you use the camera on Ch? 10 fps is hard on any shutter and mirror mechanism. I honestly never use it, and yet see people use it all the time, even for mundane, stationary images.
