Xqd

Hey guys/gals, I have been using the single SD card in my D500 for awhile now. Is an XQD a good investment for my camera or do y’all think the SD is just about the same?

That really depends on how you shoot, I guess.
Do you encounter any buffer issues with using only the SD card?

Also, you're not able to do backup or RAW/JPEG shooting with only one card.
As mentioned in another thread, I can't comment on buffer speed issues when only using the SD card.
I have mine set up to RAW -> XQD and JPEG -> SD.

I’m mainly a sports photographer so buffer speed is SUPER important. I don’t do the backup but definitely would if I had both that way I would finally be able to use the snapbridge app. Do you think your xqd is better overall?

I would think so.
I guess there’s a reason Nikon made the D500 with the XQD slot. And the D5 with two...

I haven't tried SD only. I use the xqd and never have a buffer issue. I shoot a lot of runners and try to get as many faces as I can and the d500/xqd combo is my most reliable for buffer. If you're not having a buffer issue you're probably fine but if you anticipate needing a basically infinite buffer, an xqd is recommended.

I shoot with both the XQD and SD, with both raw and jpg backed up across both cards. No buffer problems as yet, but haven’t tried to do super long bursts either.

But on paper, XQD is definitely the way to go if you need to clear buffer fast.
