Dear Nikon,
You have made an incredible wildlife camera with the D500! I promise to buy 2 D510's if you grant me just one wish...

A SILENT SHUTTER!

Not some gimmicky, live view only or with a reduced frame rate but, a fully integrated silent shutter.

Give us wildlife photographers the last tool we REALLY need to have the perfect wildlife camera, PLEASE!

I put an incredible amount of work and time getting close to animals so as to capture them in amazing detail and behaving naturally. The sound of the shutter brings unwanted attention to the photographer sending some animals scurrying for cover and blowing my hard work and time in the field.

So, respectfully, give us the PERFECT wildlife camera...the D510 with true, silent shooting. I'll buy the first 2!

Sometimes the shutter noise can work to your advantage. The shutter slap can get the animals (or bird in my case) attention and they to look straight at you, giving you a better shot. Its worked for me quite often, not all the time but you gotta take the rough with the smooth;)

Not that I'm not sympathetic, because I too would love to have a truly silent-shooting DSLR but...

Doesn't most of the noise generated by a DSLR actually come from mirror-slap?

Great news! If you prefer the shutter noise you have the D500...

I can easily tap my finger, move my foot or make a squeak to get attention if I want it. My WISH is for all "smooth", hold the "rough"!

If Nikon wants to be a "mirrorless player"... they're gonna have to compete with Sony... and right now, the A9 is going to be the camera to beat...

Sony have just knocked it out of the park with the Sony A73, there is no way the first Nikon will compete, just like the first Sony mirrorless had bugs and issues

Sadly... If recent past performance is an indicator, Nikon will make many missteps... Sony has certainly set the bar high... As a market leader, Nikon will be expected to meet that bar... their absence has already been noted in that market, and that only puts more pressure on Nikon to move the bar...

It depends on who makes the decisions at Nikon, accountants or people who know about cameras, I believe Nikon can get it right first time, not so sure they will though.

It really makes no difference who makes the decisions... If they make the wrong one, they won't be in business long enough to worry about who makes any decisions... ;)

Agreed.

Sony has astoundingly good product and solid market share within the mirrorless market itself. IMO, Nikon needs to go way beyond simply not screwing this up, they need to pull out ALL the stops and drop some absolutely BOMB product. Product that will appeal waaay beyond their existing fan-base. They need to leverage the entirety of the Nikon legacy and in all honesty... I'm not sure they'll manage to do all of that.

I hope they don't, but I can certainly see Nikon snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
