D500 Doesn't Turn Off

Greetings,

Scanned the forum and I didn't find another topic like this.

I recently received my D500. In the past week, I've discovered that my top display on the D500 does not turn off when the camera is switched to "off." Aperture, shutter, ISO, etc is still shown on the display. The camera even reacts to me pressing the shutter release as shown in the images below - however, the camera does not capture an image when in the "OFF" position. The only fix I've found it removing the battery, but once the camera turns on and off again, the issue is back.

Has anyone seen this issue before? It has gone away twice now for a few days, then returns.

I purchased this camera refurbished from Nikon directly. Roughly 1600 actuations as of today. Since I've owned it, it's been cared for well.

I feel like this display issue is causing a battery drain, both of my Nikon batteries do not last long at all..

Third image shows camera in "OFF" position with my finger on the actuation. Does not actuate, just changes display.

Yup... That's a problem. Considering the short warranty refurbs carry, I would waste no time getting in touch with Nikon regarding a repair.

Try it with no memory card installed. I've seen other bodies that would not turn off because they were having issues finishing up shutdown business with a bad memory card. I don't recall if the camera responded to the shutter button like yours. This looks bad, so don't waste any time.

I would return it under warranty...

Here's the problem with refurbs.... sometimes, a camera gets returned for an obscure but legitimate problem... finds its way into the refurb program without the problem being documented, and then can get thru the refurb program and back in the hands of a consumer without the original problem being noted or fixed...

Update: Nikon Customer Support has instructed me to call their support line to go through some troubleshooting procedures.

Will see how this goes.

Had the same problem with my new 500D one day. Try this:
Turn the camera in Off position
Remove the battery from the camera
Wait a few seconds
Insert the battery again

Maybe it helps. It worked for me.

Hey there! Thanks for the tip - this works to remove the issue temporarily, but the next time the camera is turned to "OFF" the issue returns. :/

Update: Contacted Nikon CS today and had a good experience. Katie, the CS Rep., stated that she had not heard of this issue before and agreed it is an issue.

Katie asked me to send the D500 in and stated she would cover shipping costs considering I just purchased the refurbished camera from Nikon a few weeks ago. I thought that was quite nice.

I'll be sending the D500 in as soon as I get the label and will report back with what happens. Time to dust off the D3400 for a short while..

I'll report back soon!

To update this thread, I received the D500 back from Nikon very quickly.

The return label provided got the camera to Nikon in one day and I waited only a few days for the camera to be shipped back. Awesome. I had to settle with my D3400 for a bit.

The issue has not been repeated since I received the D500 back. They upgraded the firmware, did a cleaning, adjusted AF (not sure why), and replaced something in the camera. I don't have the bill with me at the moment.

Short version, Nikon took care of the issue and I couldn't be happier. Love the D500.

Ran into EXACTLY same issue with my D500 this weekend past. The camera is 11 and 1/2 months old so wasted no time sending it into Nikon for repair. You could “almost” live with this problem if it wasn’t for fact that any setting changes are lost every time battery is removed and replaced! I am assuming that the camera will write any setting changes to internal memory when powered off, but since it doesn’t properly power off settings cannot be written. 2-button reset has no effect on problem. Menu based factory reset just causes camera to hang, because I assume the factory reset requires a power off cycle to complete, which the camera cannot perform. I think any attempt to update firmware would be DISASTEROUS due to the power off problem. Hope no-one has attempted that!

Greetings,

Quick question, do you use third party lenses such as Tamron lenses or Sigma lenses? I don't remember where is found this information, but when my D500 had this issue I read that it can be triggered by third party lenses being connected when shutoff - such as the Sigma 150-600 I was using at the time. After firmware update from Nikon, the issue never repeated even with third party lenses. Good news is, there appears to be a fix!
