What the heck is wrong with the D500 and Nikon?

Can someone tell me what is wrong with this POS D500? Yesterday I put a fully charged battery in it and it said I had taken 1 picture in the battery info menu. So I actually took a pic to try the new Xqd card I bought for it. I had done the firmware upgrade to 1.13 as that was suppose to fix it. Today it has 2 pics listed an down to 80%. The longer I have this camera the more I hate it. Who in their right friggen mind would want one of these? My D7200 blows the doors off of it in every way except for speed and possibly focusing. Please help before I run over it with my truck on Sunday... And no I didn't leave it turned on. POS D500..

Check the wireless settings...that could be sucking down more battery than what you’re used to with the D7200.

This was my thought. Although I don't own a D500, there are a few posts on this forum discussing some of the battery problems. The wireless option is the one that seemed to cause the battery to drain the most.

I'm sorry that you are having issues with your d500. Sounds like a bad battery. From the symptoms it sounds your battery just can't hold charge. Did you call Nikon service? I own both 7200 and 500 and the 500 blows the 7200 away in every aspect, except built in flash. It has the best AF of ANY Nikon and gives you a very real 10 fps. Fix your battery issue and enjoy the best Nikon DX camera ever.

I have airplane mode turned on. That should kill any wireless functions. But this happens with the camera off. I am also using "li-on20" batteries. I am tired of companies telling us how great their product is but not actually delivering a great product. I wonder really how many people are displeased with their D500 but are too embarrassed to admit it , so they keep saying how great it is. I noticed how inferior the IQ is compared to the D7200 first time I reviewed my pictures. If my D7200 hadn't been such a good camera, I would leave Nikon altogether.

Is this happening with one single battery or more than one battery? Bad li ion batteries are not uncommon. I use wireless on my d500 and shoot almost exclusively sports on it and routinely take 3000+ pics at 10 fps on a single charge.

Sorry to see you've had such a negative experience. I am in love with my D500.

Couldn't agree more! I haven't touched my D7200 since the day my D500 arrived. I will say that the battery life is not as good over a day of shooting but I shoot it gripped so no issue. I don't care anyway, it's not about battery life, it's about getting the shot and that's where the D500 makes it's living!

The only time I have had battery issues is when I was trying to use Snapebridge and the software was taking forever to pair with my cell phone. I carried extra batteries, eventually got snapebridge to work. Frankly, now I leave the camera in airplane mode and don't bother using snapebridge and have not had issues with battery life. I do make sure to bring extra batteries and I have an after market battery grip that sometimes I use... I am going to the Rolex 24 race January 26-28 and I'll bring three batteries and most likely by grip and will be using the D500 with my 200-500 lens.... Best camera I have ever owned. I'm now interested in buying the D850.

I do have a friend that sold his D500 and lenses and started over again with the Sony A9 and new lenses.... He is happy with his change over and said mainly changed to have a lighter camera....

Well, I like my D7100, but I LOVE my D500, for its better AF and high ISO noise, but also for its overall even better image quality, so I don't follow you here. I also do not have a battery issue, so I suspect something is wrong with your D500.

@bandit993, If it is sucking the battery dry when the camera is turned off there has to be an issue somewhere in the circuitry of the camera. I do not have a 500 but if something is turned off there should be no drain on the batteries. If I were in the exchange period I would exchange it. If not I would contact service.

When I got my d7200 I had to go through about 3 charging cycles before my batteries started holding a good charge, but after that they were fine. This just sound like something has a short that is draining the battery.

I've read this twice now on this thread. I'm sorry, but it's apples and oranges. The A9 is a full-sensor, mirrorless camera with an electronic viewfinder. The D500 is a high speed, crop sensor DSLR. High speed does not ONLY mean FPS (the sony gives you around 15 fps vs 10 on the d500). It also needs the high speed predictive autofocus to go with it. The sony is $2500 more than the Nikon and it has nowhere near the quality or diversity of lenses available.

They are two great tools for different jobs. The D500 is your go-to camera for everything high speed: sports, wildlife. The A9 is a professional camera for those needing a full sensor in a small package. I would never use a mirrorless camera in low temperatures (unless it is a Leica M) because of the very significant lag in the electronic viewfinder. Try shooting a football game in Boston this weekend with anything other than a DSLR!!! (BTW thermometer says -17 this morning!!!).

So. If you have a ton of high quality Nikon glass and need a high speed camera the D500 is the best ever. If you are starting from scratch (or have a bunch of mediocre third party Nikon mount lenses), don't do much high speed photography, or care more about weight than AF performance, then the A9 is a great camera. In fact, the A7 in one of its different flavors is probably an even better comparable at around $2500 or $2000 slightly used.

Most electronic device today never turn off completely. Notice how with your camera off your top lcd display shows a count or when you insert a memory card the light flashes it's because circuity is still active and is consuming power. Think of turning new electronics as putting it in a very low power mode. The off/on switch in most electronic devices today only tells the circuit board to power up completely. This is not to say the OP does not have a camera problem, the consumption should be very low in this mode.

Reset the camera if that doesn't work contact Nikon or exchange the camera if still possible.
