D500 Will Not Save NEF File

After shooting the other day I downloaded my NEFs from the XQD and Jpegs from the SD. I formatted both and a couple of days later I took a picture and noticed both cards only had a JPEG file on them. I checked and my primary slot is still XQD and secondary is raw + j. But it is acting like the second slot is set to backup? Anyone know what to check or is the camera bad?

Check the menu settings for "Image Quality" (raw, jpg, raw + jpg) and "Role Played by Card in Slot 2" and make sure they are configured correctly for what you want.

Unbelievable. I never made a change to the settings but when I checked the Image Quality it was JPEG FINE instead of NEF RAW + JPEG FINE. Thanks for your help.

Kinda figured that had to be the cause. Thing is, and you'll have to consult your manual to find out the particulars on this, but... There's a certain combination of button pressing/command wheel turning that adjusts those settings. It's possible that's how your settings got adjusted without you being aware of it.

What Paul said. I forget the button combination but I believe that all the buttons on the D500 are programmable so perhaps once you find out what it is it might be a good idea to reprogram that button to a less debilitating function. :)
