D500 RAW Editing

I purchased a grey market D500 and tried to use the Nikon software (free) I used for my D7000 to edit RAW images. When I could not I eventually downloaded the Nikon View D I think it is. For some reason it will not let me edit them either. I checked and can use the new software to edit my D7000 RAW files. Does it have something to do with the mistake I made of buying the grey market model?

If so is there a fix or do I need to use different software? If so does anyone have a suggestion for what to use?

I have done everything to stay away from paying for software that I have no idea how to use and am frankly scared of due to how vast that software is. I am not now nor do I plan to be a pro. I just want photos I can be proud of without spending hours per photo to make them "perfect".

View NX-D is a image viewer, if you want to edit your D500 raw files you'll need to use Capture NX-D. You'll need the latest versions for your more modern D500. The old version might work with the older D7000 files but you'll need the newer codec to work with the newer raw files of the D500. Once you have the right software, you'll be good to go.

Download Capture NX-D by going here: Nikon Imaging | Global Site | Capture NX-D

Being Grey Market will not effect the RAW files.

The Nikon software should work but they may not have updated to the latest version to handle the new camera.

You might try Zoner Free

It was Capture NX D I just could not remember the name. As I mentioned I used that to edit my D7000 files but when I select the D500 Raw file the tools grey out.

Is it the latest version of Capture NX-D (version 1.4.3, released on 22 November 2016)?

Thanks for the suggestion Don.

Download it this afternoon and had it check for updates and it said it was. Very strange.

The latest version will work, as will the latest versions of Lightroom and Photoshop, which I highly recommend. :)

This is crazy. I downloaded Zoner and setup the account. I opened it and selected the folder with the D 500 NEF files and chose one of the files. It popped up a message that it was a file not supported and I should download and install the Adobe DNG converter which I did and set it up as directed in the preferences section. It still gives me the same error. So I navigate to the converter on my drive and select the folder with the D 500 NEF files and told it to convert them and it says the source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files.

I also uninstalled and reinstalled the ViewNX i and Capture NX D and verified it is the 1.4.3 version and it will not let me edit the D 500 files.

I do not see how this could be anything but the fact it is a grey market and the file is different?

Very frustrating.

I know from experience it has nothing to do with your camera being grey market. Your grey-market D500 was produced in the same factory as any other D500. The only difference is the route it took to get to your front door after leaving the Nikon factory.

Can you upload a few of your D500 raw files to Drop Box, or some other similar website? That way we could download some of the files you're having issue with to see if we can work with it them on our end. It's possible your camera is defective and generating raw files that can not be used, but we're waaaaaaay far away from coming to that conclusion.

I would like that if you could do that for me. I have only used Drop Box once. What do I need to do?

I added two D500 NEF files to my Dropbox account. If you give me your info I can share the folder. I guess that is the best way to do it.

You'll need to upload one or more raw files to your Drop Box account (three would probably be more than enough). You'll want to move those raw files into a single folder. Once the raw files are in their own folder you can then post a link here in this thread that will take us to that specific folder without giving us access to your whole drop-box. You can adjust the Privacy Settings on your account pretty easily at any time in the future. Once we have access to that folder we can download those raw files.

I hope I did this right.

Okay, I'm not sure what the problem is but here's what I'm finding...

Your .nef files will not open using Adobe Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw or Photoshop CC. They WILL open using IRFanview, a free image editing app I use a lot.

This has me stumped. The photos look fine in IRFanview but nothing else I have on my work computer will open them. The only thing I can think of is that the file headers are corrupt... But in all honesty, this is getting over my head. I don't really know what the problem is.

EDIT...
The only thing I can think of to try would be using different memory cards. I'm grasping at straws here but maybe the cards are corrupting the files somehow. I really don't know and in all honesty that suggestion is nothing more than a shot in the dark...

I tried to open one file and it just wouldn't. I have the latest versions of PS CC and Nikon Capture DX and nothing to show.

I wonder what could cause this.

Can you use jpeg files? What does the exif from the jpegs say?

Could the files be locked in camera???
