A few thoughts on the D500

I have had several cameras over the last 46 years but I must say that this D500 just blows everything else away that I have ever owned. The keeper rate on this camera is extremely high. In the past two weeks I have taken 256 pictures at my grandson's Lacross game with the camera nailing all but 7 images and I think that was do to me. Today I just shot 112 images of my granddaughters soccer game and it only missed on three shots and again I think that was probably due to me also. I have found with this camera that I have just about eliminated any time spent on post processing and that is a very BIG PLUS for me.This camera just does so many things very good on it's own that it makes picture taking much easier and a lot more fun. The fun factor has gone waaaaaaaay up and the work factor has gone waaaay down. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with this camera. The three pictures that I will post here are straight out of the camera. Other than a need to crop to make the composition better I do not plan on doing anything to these images. THIS IS A GREAT CAMERA!!!!! If I calculated right that is about a 97% keeper rate.

i would love to be cuddling it now, maybe................

Joking aside if you are considering it make sure your 50-500 will work with it,Sigma did some sort of update a couple of years ago due to compatibility issues with later Nikons, could be a fix for it or yours may be ok but not sure.

I would like to clarify one point on the high keeper rate. That is the keeper rate or ability of the camera to give me a focused, sharp, colorful picture. When you figure in the subject turning it's head and other factors the keeper rate is a little lower due to things the camera does not have control over but for the cameras contribution it usually nails it's part of the process.

think this is correct, i would need an update on any new camera i get.

Looking at the pictures posted they need some very heavy cropping 50% + so for me starting at 20 mp is not a good place. and those horrible pro controls ...no thanks .

I don't understand how you came up with this . Are you saying that these shots were cropped 50% or more, or that they will need to be cropped that much . Looking at the Exif, the shots were taken at a 140 and a 170 mm.
Assuming that the OP used a 70-200 mm ,it tells me that he had some room left to zoom in further.
Also there seems to be some more room left to get in closer with the feet as well.

Also, the OP perhaps can not run around anymore like when he was in his twenties to keep up with the action on the field.

The only thing that I can conclude (and it's only my opinion) that the OP perhaps needs a longer lens, which has absolutely nothing to do with this camera that we are talking about.

About the control, that is a matter of taste and what you are comfortable with. I myself see advantages in both style of layout.

The OP said they were uncropped ..IMHO to get the best from them they need serious cropping.
Yes a longer lens or more MP and more cropping..as for running about you can usually tell which team is the strongest and bias your position to that side or just follow your relative on the field.

Let me say that the reason for my post was to point out what a good job this camera does with focusing and that I like the colors and image it gives me right out of the camera. It was very cold and the action was moving fast so I really wasn't overly worried about filling the frame as I mentioned in the original post about the need to crop these pictures. The post was about stating a few thoughts about the camera and wasn't posted for a critique on my abilities to take a picture. I was mainly testing out the focusing ability of the camera and as I stated in my opinion worked very well. I am personally like the layout of the camera and how well it performed for me. just because I am thrilled with it doesn't mean it is for everyone but I am convinced that the vast majority of photographers that try this camera will give it two thumbs up. it does a lot of things very well and I highly recommend the D500 to anyone that is considering getting one.

I would like to add that this is a chance for trying out my new camera and is my granddaughter's soccer game, I am not on a paid assignment to shoot a pro game!

Its as bit like bird photography ,until of course we see the cropped in image we cannot tell if its in focus or if there are enough POI. Knowing what lens would also help in our assessment of the D500

He wasn't asking for C&C he was just stating why he thought the D500 was a great camera.

Would be good if you were as quick posting your own images as you are to criticize others.

The first is the original image and the second is a crop of the same image. Lens was a Nikon 70-200VR F2.8 Her cheeks are red due to the cold weather. The original is 606kb and the crop is a 414kb image.
