Updating the firmware on the Yonquo 685 and 622n-TX

Bought a Yonquo 685 strobe, 622N-TX xmitter, and 622N-II transciever... In THEORY, they work fine. But, I SWEAR, I'm NEVER gonna update the firmware on ANY piece of photographic equipment again!

Last year, updated the NIkon D810 and it spent 2 weeks at Nikon 'cause the update failed and bricked the body.

THIS TIME, while reading through the manuals for the 622N-TX, it stated that I should make sure it was using the current firmware... Mine had 1.05 and 1.10 was out so I downloaded it and updated the transmitter... Worked fine. Indicated no problems. Everything looked fine. UNTIL I TURNED IT ON AGAIN... Here's what the display looks like now:

pg0025.jpg

Yes, I tried the two-button reset. Yes, I replaced the batteries. Yes, I powered it off and on repeatedly. And so on... I'm going to try updating again, but...

BTW: The 685 has a new version of firmware available too, but at this point I'm afraid to touch it.....

I'm back up and running...... I tried re-installing the 1.10 firmware. Same result, still the wonky display. I went out and looked for the 1.05 firmware. Didn't find THAT, but I DID find the 1.08 version, so I downloaded that and installed it. Worked fine. TX is back in operation. SO, I reran the 1.10 firmware update AGAIN and it went right back to the bad display.

Next, I went out to an alternate location and downloaded the 1.10 firmware again, and installed it. NOPE. Back to the same unusable display.

SO, I reinstalled the 1.08 firmware and things are working fine. Apparently, for whatever reason, my 622N-TX does NOT like the 1.10 firmware.

Now that I've got that working again, and y'all had good luck getting the firmware updated on the 685, I'll look to see if there's anything in the latest firmware for the 685 that would be important, and if so, give that a try...

I'm adding this as a separate reply instead of updating my previous reply 'cause this may be important to some folks...............................

Now that the TX is working I decided to update the 685 to the current version................

Downloaded the 1.3.4 firmware from Yongquo. Downloaded the 1.1 Flash update software.... Everybody is CURRENT...... Installed, unzipped, did all the normal stuff.....

Held the GR button and turned on the TX. got the OK. The Flash Update software was happy and said "Yup, connected". Turned on the 685 while holding the Mode button and it went into update mode, showing the old firmware 1.3.2..........

Ran the update. Went fine, churned along 'til it was done. LED on the flash went red/blue/whatever... Happy happy........

EXCEPT THAT AT THE END, THE FLASH DIDN'T RESTART............................

YES, I BRICKED THE FLASH TOO!!!!!!!!!

Off to the Internet to find some information. Found instructions. SEVERAL sets. Found the 1.3.3 version of firmware so I downloaded that. Tried again.......

STILL JUST A BIG PAPERWEIGHT.......

Over in the dpreview forum I found a long topic about updating the firmware. And FINALLY after reading a bunch of topics/replies I found this:

"Add this bit: If the updater shows no sign of recognising the .dfu file, try renaming it from Yongnuo's name (eg rename YN685N_FW_V1.3.3.dfu (note strange characters in the name) to 685_133.dfu and browse to that instead."

My update file(s) BOTH looked like YN685N_FW_ú+ú¦.ú¦.4, so I went ahead and renamed the .dfu file, removing the gibberish.... Reran the update. This time it worked fine.

My UPDATE RECOGNIZED THE .DFU WITH THE WONKY CHARACTERS FINE - OR AT LEAST IT SAID IT DID, AND IT SAID IT SUCCESSFULLY UPDATED.....

That's it. I'm DONE. I don't want to update any other firmware EVER AGAIN! I apparently have much bad karma or something.

Rocketman - what settings would be in chinese that I need to change? The filename for the 622N-TX firmware is english, as are what's on all the displays...

I'll go see if I can find them on facebook...

[update] I don't see anywhere on a facebook page to post about this experience, but if you've to a link I certainly do so.

Still waiting for the pointer to the chinese I need to change... And a link to a facebook page where I can post this experience... Or was the reply meant to be a joke?

@GracieAllen I just received the YN622N-TX iTTL and YN 622 Transceiver so this thread is one to follow. I went to the Yongnuo web page for the firmware upgrade as was suggested in the manual and only find the V1.08 firmware listed for it. Where did you find the V 1.10? Maybe they pulled it because of problems. For the record, I haven't tried to do the update yet. May try later if my sloooooooooowwwww ISP will let me download the files without timing out.

An update to my last post. I did get the firmware updated to V1.08. I still haven't found V1.10 however.

Thanks hark. I purchased the flash from Amazon, along with the 622N-TX and 622N II. First, let me say I'm about the LEAST expert person on Facebook in the world... So, not finding something there never surprises me. I looked through Facebook, and found some pages for Yongnuo, but the "Yongnuo flash" page doesn't appear to allow me to enter comments. Nor did the other ones associated with Yongnuo.

I went to the speedlightfundaments page you showed, and it appears to be some kind of "member only" thing. It appears I have to do some kind of "mother may I" to ask a question there. I hit the "join group" button and I presume I'll eventually hear from someone...

cwgrizz, your link caused me to go back to the 622N-TX online manual, and on page 15 I found this link:
www.hkyongnuo.com/e-detail.php?ID=339
except that it's not working. So, I did the search again and found the firmware downloads at
https://www.photo-store.net/firmware-downloads/

The only version of 1.10 I could find was for the 622C, which caused me to go to MY folder and see exactly WHAT I'd been installing. I'd downloaded and INSTALLED version YN622C-TX_FW_V1.10. Which makes me feel a WHOLE lot better that it was MY stupid human trick, not Yongnuo's........ THOUGH, it would be nice if the update software yelled and screamed that I was about to DO SOMETHING STUPID LIKE INSTALL THE CANON VERSION, THAT WOULD BRICK THE 622N-TX...

So, unless I'm still incorrect, and there's a Nikon version of 1.10 out there, it appears that 1.08 is the current version, and as long as you install the NIKON one in your 622N-TX, it appears to work......

As for the firmware updates for the YN685, those problems appear to be with file naming, and once I found the topic elsewhere that said "if there are gibberish characters in your filename, rename it", and did so, it worked fine. Though, AGAIN, it would be NICE IF THE INSTALLER SOFTWARE WOULD YELL AND SCREAM AND NOT INSTALL FIRMWARE THAT TURNS THE 685 INTO A BRICK UNTIL YOU RENAME THE FIRMWARE FILE.

@GracieAllen Glad you got it sorted out. Yes, I had to look carefully for the right one to download too. I also found the link that was listed in the manual to not work when trying to download the zip files for the update. I also was able to download the update from I think the same site you listed (not sure though as I just googled for the firmware update for the TX). I intend to buy the YN 685 if it works with the 622N-TX controller. I have the YN 568 EX and thought that the addition of the YN 685 would give me a second flash for OCF along with the YN 568 EX. I will be waiting for reports on how the 685 and the 622 work together for you.

You can also update if running Parallels Windows 10 as a virtual machine for Mac Users but you need to disable signing mode. When you download the software firmware and setup.exe place the folders on your desktop folder if you share the desktop folder (mac and windows the same desktop folder shared) is easier than separate. Select #7 at the restart menu once you get there after reboot install the setup.exe file then navigate to the folder with the DFU file. So I updated 1.06 to 1.08.

cwgrizz, the combination of YN685, 622N-TX, Nikon SB-800 and 622N II is working really well for me...

With just the 685 and TX, I've figured out how to do normal TTL flash, and gotten the multi mode to work (not sure how often I'll need it, but it's nice to know I have it if I do). Manual, of course, is easy.

I also added a second flash (one of my old SB-800s), putting it on the 622N II transceiver and everything worked fine together.

The auto zoom works fine and does a good job of extending the flash range. After enough time I even figured out what most of the special functions are for and even managed to turn OFF the really annoying red blinking lights on the front of the base (slave indicator).

Hi everyone,

I have just tried to update the Yongnou YN 622n TX Controller from 1.05 to 1.08 and it failed to do so even using the process correctly.

I have followed this tutorial:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0nrMVuOBzI&t=195s
the software shows:
failed to update firmware. error code = 0x85

Now the trigger is stuck on start up showing
yn

622
FU
and it seemed to have erased the older firmware too (1.05)
Can anyone help me?
PS: software updater and 1.08 version

@GracieAllen @cwgrizz

Not sure if this helps anyone or not but... Yongnuo firmware updates can be found here: Yongnuo Firmware

The only firmware update version 1.10 that I see is for the Yongnuo YN622"C"-TX; a different beast than the 622"N"-TX.

The "C" is the Canon version, the "N" is the Nikon version.

Did you do the update this way:
To start Windows in safe mode or get to other startup settings:

  • Select the Start button, then choose Settings .
  • Select Update & security > Recovery.
  • Under Advanced startup select Restart now.
  • After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • After your PC restarts, select a startup setting by pressing the corresponding number
  • Here are the images in sequence; this also works with mac users that have Parallels and Windows 10 and what I had to do to update Yonguno and Flashpoint Zoom's -- Just redo you should be okay --lou Cioccio
