D500 Good, but at least on heavy sigh...

<commence ranting, whining, and complaining about something I admit is moderately trivial>

I KNEW it was too good to be true... A replacement for a D300 with a good frame rate, and an OK resolution (lower than the D7200 but better than the D300), ESPECIALLY one that's touted as a D810 with a crop sensor... Which in my world means ALL the buttons, controls, doo-dads, and other fiddly things you have to learn with every new body are in the SAME place as the D810 and work the SAME WAY......

Anybody want to take a guess as to WHICH button I APPARENTLY USE A LOT? One that isn't there any more on the D500? Turns out I change shooting modes a LOT... From aperture mode to manual, maybe back to shutter priority, but a LOT of switching between aperture mode and manual...... Imagine my surprise when I got out and found some birds to shoot today, and my finger jumped to the MODE button and THERE WASN'T ONE... Eventually I figured out it had MOVED to the OTHER side of the camera where it's as inconvenient as possible and requires using the OTHER hand to get at... BUT, on the other hand, the ISO, which I MAY change once in a while, is now sitting right next to the record button that I've previously used for ISO on previous bodies...

So, Nikon, here's a D810 - it has a MODE button on top. If you REALLY MUST have an ISO button, WHY NOT HAVE BOTH OF 'EM... Why REMOVE the MODE button - the ISO button doesn't appear to be in the same location so WHY NOT JUST HAVE BOTH OF 'EM? And WHY make the record button and ISO button DEDICATED? WHY not just let me REPROGRAM the movie record button like I did on the D7200?

<ranting, whining, complaining off>

Yes, the body is nice. The 10 fps works well. When the battery grip gets here it'll work fine with the extra buttons (which it turns out I ALSO use a lot).

I haven't found anything in the manual or online, but does ANYBODY know of a way to REPROGRAM EITHER of those &^%$# buttons to let me switch shooting modes?

I really like the D500 layout, I change ISO a lot, so the button location is ideal, I rarely change mode, so again that button is well placed. But I can understand your annoyance when the layout differs between cameras. According to Thom Hogan, there is also a piece of cheese that moves around. I've searched my camera for the cheese with no joy. Maybe it is an option. Or maybe it is only available on US cameras. I wonder if they also come with a biscuit or a pickle?

Really? You lost me right there. Who says the resolution is lower than a D7200?

OK, now somebody has to explain the "cheese" thing... What am I missing......

As for resolution, last time I checked, my D7200 creates a RAW file 6000 x 4000 px. My D500 creates a RAW file 5568 x 3712 px. Was my term "resolution" incorrect for this difference?

It's my understanding that to arrive at megapixel resolution you would need to multiply those numbers: For the D500 you multiply 5,568 by 3,712 which equals 20,668416; or 20.6 million pixels. Versus 6.000 x 4.000 which equals 24 million pixels for the D7200.

Ahh...with HF's explanation, now I understand what you were saying.

What - you could change the record button to be your ISO button on the D7200?
Can this be done on the D7100 - I hate the ISO button where it is, probably the worst thing about the D7100

EDIT: If it can be done on the D7100 I couldnt find it

Yeah, on the D7200 I changed the movie record button to let me change ISO. There's an explanation on the web and even a Youtube video that shows how.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a setting in the menus that lets me change it to ANYTHING, much less "MODE", which is what I'd like... So, again, ANYBODY got a way to reprogram the movie record button or even BETTER, both THE ISO AND movie record buttons?

There is a option to the movie record button to change shooting modes, Its under the f1 option of the controls under the shooting menu.
I recall seing other buttons on the right that can be mapped to that.

Considering the whole package here, the loss of 4 MP's from the D7xxx series to the D500 is one of the more trivial points. I have gotten 30x40 prints that look just as good as the D7100 prints.

The problem for me is remembering which camera I'm shooting with! I constantly reach for the wrong spot and then miss my shot.

Yup, therein lies the reason for my original whining and kvetching about the stupid button....... The D500 is a good little camera but I switched back to the D810 today and constantly tried to hit the button on the right to change ISO... And when I went back to the D500, of course, I couldn't find the "MODE" button and every time I wanted to switch I had to pull the camera away from my eye and LOOK for the stupid button on the left side.......

Unfortunately, though f1 has a bunch of custom controls that can be set "preview, fn1, fn2, and so on, I don't see anywhere that the movie record button is listed as one of them...

It is one from the bottom of the list (at least on firmware C1.02)
You could also use the picture on the left to choose an appropriate button, That's how I noticed the movie button in the list.

It's a little embarrassing, but I may just be having one of those "senior moment" days... I checked and STILL didn't find the settings for the movie record button. Looked online again and didn't find anything. Went BACK IN AND WENT THROUGH ALL THE THINGS IN F1 AGAIN, and FINALLY even though I'd been on the second page 3 TIMES, I FINALLY FOUND THE &^%$#@ MOVIE BUTTON.........

THEN, I SELECTED IT and looked at the choices and decided NONE OF THEM WOULD CHANGE THE EXPOSURE MODE... NOTE: This is WHILE I'm staring at the list where the very first items says "EXPOSURE MODE"........ Blew right past that and thought, OH, I'LL SET A PHOTO MENU BANK FOR EACH EXPOSURE MODE... As I said, it's clearly a "senior moment" day and I shouldn't be allowed to do ANYTHING difficult, complicated, or important today...

EXITED from the menu, put the camera down, THEN it hit me "OH... EXPOSURE MODE".......... Went back in, down to the button, jumped into the choices, set it to "Exposure mode", and VOILA, I can now change exposure mode just by hitting the red button..........

I'm not sure whether to jump up and do the happy dance, or to slap myself on the forehead and yell "DOH"!

Thanks y'all. I MAY have eventually found it on my own, but it may have taken me a YEAR........
