The D40 is quite a good camera. Go here to read what Ken Rockwell has to say about the D40.

While I don't always agree with everything Rockwell has to say re Nikon DSLRs and how to use them, IMO he's right on with his review of the D40! I am constantly amazed at how well HAND HELD shots made at such low shutter speeds of 1/15 to 1/30 sec come out with this little gem of a camera!

Rockwell says it's because the D40 has "very very little shutter and mirror vibration", and I guess he must be right, because I've never had any other camera, P+S or DSLR, that will do stuff like this camera does! I recently took some night shots at a minor league baseball game using the D40 with the f1.8 35mm AF-S lens, and the results at ISO 800 and f2. - f6.(and those low shutter speeds) are as good as other DSLRs would probably give you at ISO 200-400 and much higher shutter speeds!

Here's some examples:

(Look at how SHARP the writings on those billboard signs are here! -Amazing!!)

3} 1/13 @ f 2. , ISO auto-800. Hand held.. Bottom cropped and shadows lightened with PSE6.0

That f1.8 35mm is a great match with the D40. A fantastic combo, IMO!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my d40- now that I found it's discontinued, I won't be letting go of it ever. It has never failed me in the quality of the photos it takes and the only time I had bad photos was from photographer failure, not camera failure. I would say the price is worth it.
