Hi I bought the Nikon AF 70-300 f/4.0-5.6 G Black Zoom Nikkor Lens
to pair up with my Nikon D70, but I also own a really nice Nikon D4OX which really does produce beautiful photos
and I was wondering if any one has had any good results with the D40X and a zoom lens, best wishes Brian.

Hi Brian, I'm sure glad to see another D40 user. I've only had my D40 for a few days now and am getting used to it as quickly as I can. I don't have the 70~300 but I do have the kit 55~200 but I haven't had a chance to give it an honest try yet. I don't have a tripod and think trying to handhold even a 200mm lens would be unrealistic for me. Sure looking forward to seeing some of your pictures though!

Hi there really good we are not alone lol and its all pretty new to me-too even though I have had little go with my D70 I am curious to try my new zoom lens on my D40X even though I will need to manually focus it and you are wright you will be needing a tripod as I soon found out on my D70 LOL its all good fun and a lot to learn and I will keep a look out on what you are doing because with what I know about the D40X it will be you teaching me, best wishes Brian

you should be able to handhold the 200 ok unless you are shooting at a real slow shutter speed

Hi this was also true of my 70mmx300mm zoom on my D70 but the photos were strikingly much better on the tripod but obviously would be not so bad when held using the 200k

i usually hand hold my 500mm lens, been down to 1/100 with decent results, don't be to quick to fire, i can take 4-5 seconds to be perfectly steady

Thanks Roy I will bare that in mind because I would like to take shots without hauling my good but heavy tripod around so I will have a go at holding back the fire time and I must stop dipping the camera when I fire because I have noticed I have a bad habit of moving the camera as I press the firing button, thanks for the good advice Brian.

If you struggle hand holding at 300mm try a short burst of shots when at that length, maybe 3 or 4 you could find your sharpest is 2 or 3.

Hi yes I did struggle a little holding at 300mm and like I said would prefer not to carry the tripod around every where I go so I will try different methods, mind you I have never tried the D40X with a zoom lens and hope I can cope with the manual focus, thanks again Brian.
