D40 SD card capacity

I quit photography when the price of flash bulbs went too high......now I'm an old retired dumb guy and wanted to fiddle around with it again. I bought an older model camera D40 and would like to know if I can use a larger than 4GB SD card in it. I don't even have the camera yet as I bought it off ebay. Only know that no card was included and want to get my ducks in a row by the time it gets here. Thank you indeed.

Thank You for the absolutely sound advice RocketCowboy. I had found that and the manual that said the very same thing but also noted the date was 2006. I wondered if that was about the largest card that was available at that time or what......Thanks again.

Thank You Needa for the link. I found the manual first thing this morning and downloaded it. Really looking forward to rekindling my photo hobby.

My assumption is that 4GB was the largest at the time, but then Nikon also wouldn't certify/support anything that is released after the D40 went to market. I expect that larger cards will work fine, but I'd be itching to use that new camera and would want to know the card is good.

Thanks Paul, I appreciate your response, nothing like positive reinforcement! The funny thing is, now a 8 or even a 16GB card costs about what a 2 or 4 Gig card did "back then".

@ RocketCowboy, Boy o boy, you hit the nail on the head about itching to use the "new" toy. My photographic needs are pretty simple at this point...maybe the odd baseball picture of the Grandson but what I really bought this camera for was for taking close ups. I'll have to figure out what I need to add to accomplish that after I get it. In the old days I would use bellows but those were sent down the road with my Photomics.

Thanks Wayne, The "kit" I bought didn't include a few needed things and was just trying to line up what I needed to get started when the thing gets here next week. 1000 jpegs per 4 GB card will be plenty but I have some higher Gig cards on hand so just wondered...... I also have the USB cord coming so should be all set. Now I just have to wait as fast as I can! Thank You for your post.

I got my camera today (D40) and wanted to add a little bit of information to this SD card thread. I am using a Micro SD card in the SD sized holder and it works perfectly. It's a 4 GB card and I think that's plenty big enough as WayneF pointed out to me. I was able to take acceptable pictures right out of the box and was very pleased with some of them.
