D40x

I inherited a D40x (haven't receive it yet) and have a couple of questions: 1. I read the manual, it says will accept 4GB SDHC (wow must have been alot back then). I was wondering if there were any firmware updates or if this camera will accept an 8,16,32,64 bit SD card? I noticed a remote will work with it, I assume it has bulb mode, does this camera support any type of cable release?

My D40 handled 16GB cards no problem.

If you're okay with a wireless release you can get a Nikon branded version for $5.

Edit: I misread your post initially... Nikon sells the MC-DC2 wired release but there is no cable-release functionality on the D40x so it's kind of a moot point.

If you already have a D7100, I wouldn't bother with the D40x unless you just want to toy around with it. ISO 400 - 800 is just not worth it for me. Add the limited focus points, picture controls and possibly limited battery life, then you'll just end up getting frustrated. It might be a good camera for your kids if they are interested in photography.

LOL, no I wouldn't go backwards. Figured I would have my wife use it as an intro to DSLR. She's been using my Nikon 1 mirrorless but it only has the one lens. If she uses the D40x, she can use some of my DX lenses and start playing around with it more. The camera is free, so why not take advantage of it. I was looking at buying her a D3300 or D5200, LOL but now I can buy a new lens for my camera instead of a new camera. (devilish smile here :p)

There's nothing wrong with a D40X. It will produce fine photos if the operator does his/her job. Don't be concerned about ISO unless you're primarily an in-door photographer.

I just pulled out my D40x which has been untouched for more than a year since I got a D600. I decided to compare the D40x in daylight with the D600 in DX mode, and the D40x image was just as good as the D600 DX image, using exactly the same lens and exposure settings.

Also, I used a 16gb card and it worked fine.
