D40X self timer?

Hey,

A good friend of mine has just bought one of these cameras and wants to learn a bit about photography. We've had a play with his camera, trying to get used to how it shoots etc, however I have a few questions on operation:

For nights capes I like to use the 2 second delay, but with the D40X we have to keep selecting the 2 second timer. How can we set it so it STAYS on the 2 second timer?

How can you set the Aperture in Manual mode? (sorry this is from a Canon user) The only way it works for me is if I go to AP mode, change it, then back to M?

We're heading out tonight to shoot some cityscapes :) would be handy if we could figure this out.

Cheers

I've read the manual to a point, but doesn't show how to 'lock' in the 2 second timer?
P43 answers my other question :)

I have not seen a D40X, but see page 77 about Fn 11, where the Fn button can trigger self timer? Sounds like it could work.

FWIW, the D40X is a bit less versatile in this timer respect than most other models. Other timers are generally just turned on and then always present if enabled. And most accept a shutter release cable which can be a very inexpensive timer that will do many things. But the D40X only seems to offer the IR remote release.

Thanks guys, yeah we can't actually get the 2 sec timer to stay :( but the IR remote works fine, so will keep that.

Images preview works great - I couldn't imagine using a camera now without it. The D40X takes pretty good shots, just need to source some better lenses for my friend :) What's the Nikon 50mm ƒ1.8 like?
