sorry for the newbie question but I have no idea what I’m doing. Will this work with my D3400? Or being so old will there be features not supported?

Welcome to the site.

That lense will not auto focus on your camera, to auto focus it require a camera with a built in focus motor. The d3400 doesn't have one. The designation for it to auto focus on you camera is AF-S.

If you are looking for a longer zoom for you camera I would suggest the AF-S Nikon 70-300 4.5-5.6 G VR.

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

As Needa said, the lens will not autofocus on your D3400, but you can use it in manual focus mode.
