Old AF NIkkor Zoom Lens Compatibility

Hi,
I have an circa early 90's AF Nikkor 35-135mm lens which works with me film Nikon F801s body.

I am able to use the AF Nikkor lens with the D3400 body in manual mode (shutter setting thru the body is working, but aperture is not and only controllable on lens itself, ISO is changeable).

Thru the body menu, I am able to select ISO Auto Off or On. But when I set this to On, ISO value does not really change, when pointed to varying light conditions. It seems that the Auto ISO can be set to On in the menu, but does not really work with this old lens.

Is anybody able to make the D3400 ISO Auto really work with an old AF Nikkor?

TIA,

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

Unfortunately, since the D3400 body does not have a built-in focus motor, this lens will only operate in pure manual mode.

The D3400 exposure meter does not operate at all when a lens with an aperture ring is mounted. No metering, hence no auto iso.

The lens can be used as a manual lens though and a separate exposure meter might be handy, or just use the histogram.

You might want to consider trading that lens to a AF-S DX VR 55-200mm lens, which is of the requided 'G' type that has all functions available. I'd imagine the price difference is in the order of a nice cup of espresso, or maybe maximum two.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Clarify?

I mean exactly what I wrote in the first sentence in my post above yours:

The D3400 exposure meter does not operate at all when a lens with an aperture ring is mounted.

That quote has no provisions, qualifications, limitations, exceptions, restrictions or constraints. It is a logically sound example of causality of the purest form: From A follows B.

I hope that helped to clarify whatever you thought needed clarifying.

Let's end this diversion here and get back to the topic at hand, namely the Nikon D3400 and Nikkor AF 35-135mm f/3.5~4.5 and the lack of in-camera exposure metering.

That is kind of harsh. Obviously this member didn't understand.

tramp, take a look at the Nikon compatibility chart. According to what it lists, MF lenses will not meter on the D3400. I don't know what kind of chip you have. Maybe it is just for an indication of images being in focus? To get those types of lenses to work, you will need a handheld light meter--at least that's what the chart states. :(

The lens is modified and will indeed meter on any electronic Nikon F mount camera.

Not with D3400.

Hark he's not being harsh that is contempt........without investigation.

As it happens, I have done my investigation. D3400 does not meter with a lens having an aperture ring. Chip or no chip, AF or MF, rain or shine.

Also known as ignorance... ... Good Day.[
