Buying Questions

Want to buy the D3400 to replace an old Canon Rebel (broken)

Are the kits I see with various retailers the real deal (Nikon lenses, etc, etc).

Best and worse retailers (or no difference)

As you can tell, I am pretty new to this hobby and simply want to protect myself from fake items or poor retailers.

Thanks,

Fr. Jeff

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

What part of the world do you live in? If USA, B&H is very reliable, Ebay is a dice roll and Amazon too.

Welcome.
USA? The good big retailers are B&H, Adorama, and Cameta. Best Buy is ok too if you don't need any advice. Hard to find somebody knowledgeable there. There are many smaller shops that do mail order and are decent too. Amazon can go either way. Item might come from Amazon or a 3rd party marketplace seller so you need to look closely. New York mail order places can be shady. Lots of bait and switch or kits full of junk accessories. Best to stick to a kit that contains only one or two lenses that are definitely Nikon lenses. Little to no price variation on Nikon, if you find something significantly cheaper, its a red flag. Buy any other accessories on your own. Kits with tripods and filters are junk. Stick to an authorized Nikon dealer, check here:

Post a link here if you have something specific that you want opinions on.

Don't overlook your local brick and mortar shop if you still have one. If you don't soon you won't. Some may be able to match internet prices, but nothing like dealing with a human in a store.

I do shop on line but try to patronize our local shop when I can.

On line B&H has been good for me, bought a fair bit from them. They ship free to Canada for a fee, but returns can be problematic to ship back to the USA. Adrorama's shipping policies are not nearly as Canada friendly so never shopped there. Sometimes direct from the manufacturer can work too. I by my Lensbabies from Lensbaby in Washington State for example.

Welcome to the forum. Welcome to the next step in the hobby. This is a good place to learn. B and H is a good place to make purchases. I like the reliability of their ship dates.

If you do have a camera shop near you it is good to check them out. I have one about 40 minutes from my home and they have been very helpful. It is nice to try stuff out before you buy sometimes.

I suggest that you compare the D3300 and D3400 specs.

Get a D3300 -
. If you are going to use flash frequently the D3300 has a more powerful flash.
. D3400 has a jack for external mike, useful while shooting Videos.
. Marginally better for low light.
. It is slightly cheaper.

Otherwise they are pretty close specs wise. The D3400 has a marginally better sensor, you will never see any difference unless you shoot RAW and do a lot of pixel peeping. D3400 has an inbuilt Bluetooth, useless if you are not going to transfer images using it.
