Novice Questions: what is up with lens filters?

somebody told me to get a set of them and us the UV filter as a lens-guard and i am ok with that, but the set comes with other filters. what would you use the red lens for?

You would probably never use a colored filter. Buy the UV by itself if you feel you need the protection. Save up for a high quality polariser filter. This is one place you do not want to go the cheapest route. ANy filter including the UV can adversely effect the quality of your photos.

Red filters were used with black & white film. They also sold yellow filters and green filters. Each added its own type of contrast depending upon the original scene. If you get a polarizing filter like Don mentioned, make sure it is a circular polarizer. They used to sell linear polarizers, but those won't with a DSLR...only film bodies.
