New to "serious" photography and Nikonites....looking for wide-angle recommendations.

after years of faking photography with a cell phone camera, i bought myself a "serious" camera...before a scheduled family trip to the UK this may. i am in the process of teaching myself how to use it.

anyway, I bought the camera, a primary lens, and a zoom lens as a package from Beach camera. the last time i was in Europe, 14 years ago (2 years BC--"before children") was before i had a digital camera, but i remember having trouble getting all of a subject into a shot--a lot of the impressive buildings are large and the squares and streets are narrow. it seems like i need a wide-angle, but that is far as my knowledge goes. i have no idea what to look for and every lens has a bunch of numbers and letters and i don't know one thing or another. so, what would be a good wide angle lens that isn't super complicated and expensive for general use--buildings, landscapes, street scenes, etc.

thanks,
jim

If considering zooms

Be sure to look at the 10-20 mm Nikkor for DX
and
my favorite, 12-28 f/4 Tokina

you certainly want 24 mm or wider for your DX camera

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

If would help greatly help you if you tell us what lenses you you currently have. Also, if you really don't know what the bunch of letters and numbers mean, you really need to spend some quality time with your cameras manual, a book for your camera, or learning videos on the internet. If not, you are not likely to get a lot better pictures than with you cell phone. "Serious" photography will require some effort on your part.

Welcome to the forum. As has been mentioned, the Tokina is a good lens.

I had the Nikon 10-24mm a few years ago and really liked it. Always have a look on the second hand market so save a bit. Hope you enjoy your holiday over here

I highly recommend the Tokina 11-16mm. What's most important when shooting with an ultra wide angle lens is to have it level. Any tilt is what causes lines to warp. I don't like the new version of the lens because it is an f/4 lens losing half a stop of light.

I have that lens for my D7100 and love it. Been wanting to sell it but Gloria won’t let me.

That was the first thing I thought of, too. If the lens isn't level to the ground, the buildings will converge due to parallax. The other issue is when a large group of people are trying to fit into a photo. The people on the left and right will be stretched slightly wider. To help prevent that from happening, he needs to keep people closer to the center of the frame when shooting really wide. <Ask me how I know.> ;)

So that's why I look so wide in my pictures...
