I am getting back into photograpy after 35 years beside point and shoot and smart phone pictures. I got me a D3400 with a AF-P NIKKOR 18-55mm and 70-300mm lens and wondering about settings I should use for night sky and astrophotography with the lens I have. And I have a ML-L3 remote also.

OK then not the coolest lens for astrophotography but you can always practice.
set camera to manual mode.
Use your 18-55 on the short (18) side and set the widest aperture you can and focus on something over 100meters away (this should take you to infinity on the lens which is where youwant to be).
Try with different ISO (I would start at 400) with long exposures of between 25 and 30 seconds.
Use a tripod and mirror up.
Let us know how you go.

Anything over about 20 to 25 seconds you will start to see the stars move if you zoom in on the photo. So practice and see what works for you.

Hover over the photo to see what this was shot at.

OOPs forgot I was or still did amatuer astrophotography/astronomy before mt stroke jan 2014. The setup I had was a 10inch orion reflector on a CG5-GT which got to be to heavy after my stroke. I had one of the earlier orion deep sky monochrome imaginer control thru starrynight software.
But I want to get back into the hobby but with lighter equipment :). So thanks for all the info I really appreciate it :)
