Any other shutter remote than the ML-L3?

I'm looking to find a remote shutter release other than the ML-L3, which I have. It's not as reliable and immediate as I want. Also, I don't want to have to use it in front of the camera. But I can't find *any* remote that is compatible with the D3400.
Has anyone had luck finding anything? Or am I stuck with the ML-L3 until I change camera bodies?

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

It appears that an IR remote like the ML-L3 is the only remote option for a D3400. From what I can see, it supports no wired remotes.

Is there any reason why something like a Vello wireless remote trigger and receiver won't work? Some of them tend to cost less than $50. Would they be compatible?

I think this may simply be an issue of where to hold the remote rather than how well it works. Keep in mind that this is not radio control: all remotes for the D3400 and several other Nikons use Infrared, which essentially means light. If there is no direct line of sight between your remote and the IR receiver built into your camera, well, it's not going to work well, because in that case you can only rely on reflections in hopes of the camera getting triggered.

Take a look at your camera's manual: the IR receiver sits on the FRONT, in the middle of the hand grip area. That means triggering from close behind is not very useful. Instead, hold the remote somewhere off the front side of your camera, just outside of the lens' viewing angle, and it should trigger every single time. I own two ML-L3's and never had a problem with them.

The question why Nikon puts the receiver on the front of the camera puzzles me, though. Like you, DinoExMachina, I don't like having to trigger shots from the front.

I've experienced this as well. I can never get the wireless remote to work reliably

Having the remote sensor in the front of the camera lets you shoot selfies! Obviously, Nikon has designed the D3XX series to compete with smart phone cameras

I use a Yongnuo for remote shutter release but not sure if it will work on the D3400 if there is no port connection - that seems silly of Nikon.

In theory it's great. But unfortunately the execution was terrible. I took a family photo and thought I was out of the frame with the remote. Keyword thought. The great pic was ruined with my remote lol

I have a Samsung Galaxy S6, i downloaded a free app that does allow my phone to ir the camera, however, i have to point the top of my phone just above and to the left of the lens. But the app has a setting for continuous or repeat fire that works great for lightning captures, as long as your elbow holds out 😂😂
