AF Sensor Not Working Properly?

The last three times I've shot, I cannot get the camera to use the center AF sensors. Every time I point the camera, it uses either the left or right sensor. I reset the settings once and that fixed the problem for a short while. The next I shot, the same thing was happening. I mostly shoot sports, so this is annoying because in many of my shots, the action is out of focus because the camera focused on something to the left or right of center.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum, my first thought is you are moving the focus point by accident, have you tried locking it in place using the lock lever (if it has one), hope i have understood your question

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

D3400 does NOT have a lock lever, however you should be able to move the focus point using the multi selector on the back of the camera. You might want to refer to your manual. You can download one at Nikon | Download center | D3400

What AF Area-Mode do you have set?

Focus Mode - AF-C, Area Mode - 3D. But this evening, I changed Area Mode to Single-point AF...same thing, the far right sensor is where it's focusing. I frame a bottle and it's focusing on the light switch to the right of the bottle.

All - thanks for the posts & the help!

So are you saying that in single point mode you cannot move the focus point to the center with the multi selector button? You should be able to jog it around to all the locations with the multi selector.

You can move it around with the multi-selector/OK buttons, or you can lock it on one point.
