Long Shutter Speed - what's the difference between Bulb and Time?

Hi. I have a wired cable release and want to take an exposure longer than 30 seconds. My understanding is that the bulb setting will continue to expose as long as I'm depressing the release button. How does the Time setting work? Thanks!

That is the time...

On Bulb... You press the release, and hold it... the shutter Opens...

begin counting...

Release the button, and the shutter Closes...

time over...

I'm not sure if its the same but on my d7200, the 'time' setting sets it up so when you press the shutter button and release it, the shutter stays open until the next shutter press. On the d7200, the top lcd shows '--' rather than 'bulb'. I'm not sure how it looks on the d3400, but I think that's the difference. Bulb you hold. Time, you press to start and press again to end.

Bulb uses one looooooooooooooooooooooooong press of the shutter button. It opens the shutter when you press it, and closes the shutter when you release it.

Time takes two actuations of the shutter release. The first press opens the shutter, the second one closes it.
