D3300 external microphone not working

Hey everyone! I just picked up my d3300 and I have an external lavalier microphone. I've tried to plug it into the Mic jack in the d3300 and it won't pick up the audio. Is there a way I can fix this? Have you adjusted the audio levels in the camera per the documentation?

So far all I've done is turn the internal Mic off and tried to plug in the external. Is there something specific that I need to adjust?

Just a heads up, I'm a complete beginner, this is my first dslr. Hopefully I can get this fixed.

I just tried that, is there a certain sensitvity that I should have it on for my external microphone?

in live view, it should be adjusted just until the sound levels get into the top bars... too high, and you get distortion..

It still doesn't seem to be picking up the audio from my microphone

i know this is simple BUT for me this is generally the place to start.

When I plug in Stereo plugs they seem to stop just short of fully plugged in. Make sure it is fully inserted. It should have a distinct click when inserted fully.

Try plugging the Mic into a cell phone, and make sure the Mic is working...

Ya it works in my phone but not in the camera.

Try inserting the plug like Don mentioned, and also try pulling it just a hair out... looking at the jack on Amazon, the detents on that jack look a little strange...

I found out that the microphone I have is a TRRS Mic and my camera needs a TRS Mic. So I think i just need to buy an adapter.
