Everyone seems to rave about the prime lens and what it can do for your camera. I am looking at this one but want to do some more research.
[h=1]Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens[/h]Any of you fellow 3300's have the lens and how does it perform for you. How good a low light lens is it? I do not think it comes with VR-how important is that? I'm hoping it''s crisp and sharp for you and produces excellent portraits. I do have the Tokina SD 12-28 F4 DX and also wonder if the prime lens would be overkill paired with this one? Please give me some feedback- Paul

I bought the 35mm two years into D3100 ownership. The performance is a quantum leap over the kit lens.
With the improved sensor of your D3300, low light performance will be superb.
It's fast, light and punches far above its price.
It works great on my D7100 too.

Just buy one. You won't be sorry.

I really like the 35mm 1.8!!! you can get a good deal on one through the Nikon refurbished program. Saved me a few bucks, and the lens has been top notch.

These are all done with the 35mm. the desert one my settings were way off, but it came out ok I guess.

I dredged up a shot from the D3100 files. I took this at the Tillamook Air Museum with the 35mm about a week after I got it.
The ME-109 was under a tarp inside the hangar. Bad light and a good test.

I don't have the nerve to get that close to a bee. I get out the 55-300 so I can get back a bit.
Great shots!

Do any of you gents think there is a better prime lens for my 3300?
The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art series is, in my opinion, a better lens but it's also $900. The Nikon 35mm f/1.8G is a gem of a prime and a fraction of the cost.

Get one; you'll be glad you did.

I bought it two years ago and use it mainly indoors or when I want shallow DOF. Coupled with D3300 it makes an excellent combination. Though portraits benefit with a longer lens, I use it for a lot of portraits and they come out well.

Have one for our D5100 - by far the best lens DX lens we have. Bought it when my grand daughter was born - didn't want to use a flash with a newborn. Absolutely fabulous.
Buy it - you will not be sorry you did.

sample shot - church basement - poor light - face under a baseball cap - still got it.
This is one of my wife's 'auto-everything' shots - only setting was 'no flash'.

Lens will be here Monday. Just wondering - is there any market at all for the kit lens I'm replacing- probably not, huh? Paul

Paul,

I would recommend to keep your kit lens, as I am sure there will be times when you want the wider focal range (I am assuming it's an 18-55).

There is not much of market for the kit lenses, you won't get much for it.
