I must be doing something wrong -- aperture control in manual mode

So, I can't figure this out. I can control the aperture in aperture priority mode by holding down the aperture/exposure compensation button and thumbing the control dial left and right. BUT that doesn't change the aperture for me in full Manual mode. According to the instruction manual and all the sites I turned up on Google, it should be adjusted exactly the same way as in aperture priority mode.

Does anyone know what's going wrong here?

Thanks in advance,
Jason

EDIT: Here's a clip of me trying to change it. You can see the mode dial is set to M, I press the aperture button and turn the command wheel left and right, but the aperture doesn't change from F2.0.

Try outside of Live View - I don't use Live View much, but I believe you cannot change the aperture when Live View is on.

You can't change aperture in LiveView mode while filming with your camera model. You have to get out of LV, change aperture and then reopen LV for the change to be effective.

Ahhhhhh you're right, this is the problem. This is not good news for me. I'm going to be shooting video and won't be using metered exposure. It'll be mostly be done visually, especially in the noir scenes. Do you know if an external monitor will show the adjustment or if it will just the the live view on a bigger screen?

You cannot change aperture with live view while filming or once LV is active before a shot. You must first get out of LV, change aperture, then open LV again and only then will the aperture change be validated and implemented.

I think (not even certain) that some Nikons have this option to change aperture while being in LV. I would suspect the higher end models such as D810 and maybe D750. Maybe someone that has these could confirm.

Thing is you can change the aperture, but just not while you're in LV. So the only option I see for you is to select your aperture BEFORE you start your scene. You will not be able to change it unless you cut and edit afterwards.

I'm going to have to play around with this later today. What a strange camera design, but it sounds like it's common in the lower end Nikons. You can change the aperture in LV in aperture priority mode, just not in manual mode.

Thanks so much for the help.
